Golf Maintenance Superintendent
Primary Responsibilities: Oversee the daily maintenance of the resort golf course(s) according to resort standards. Supervise and assist with the planting, fertilizing, and maintenance all turf, bunkers, water hazards, and surrounding native areas on golf courses. Assist in leading and managing all day to day operations while helping to plan for all future projects as the golf course matures. Day to day operations includes any work done on either golf course as directed by the Director of Golf Maintenance. Ensure that federal, state, OSHA regulations are adhered to. Knowledgeable in all aspects of fertilizers and chemicals that are applied to the golf course. Assist in irrigation and pump maintenance on both golf courses and helping to improve all energy use for the courses. Assist in planning, coordination, and preventative maintenance on all equipment for both garages along with submitting orders and maintaining parts inventory for both mechanic teams.
Essential Duties:
- Consistently follow and adhere to all structures as implemented by Director of Golf Maintenance to team members and per resort policy.
- Assist in the preparation of the annual operating and CIP expense budgets.
- Establish proper programs for maintaining the golf course(s) and equipment.
- Oversee and assist in supervising the daily maintenance of the golf course(s) and special projects to meet resort quality standards.
- Ensure that federal, state, OSHA regulations are adhered to.
- Manage department following company policies, procedures and the terms and conditions of the CBA.
- Hire, train, supervise, evaluate, counsel, assist, and discipline department staff.
- Schedule staffing, review, approve and verify department payroll.
- May initiate, review, and approve purchase orders.
- Ensure safety training and standards are maintained.
- Make recommendations on changes for improvements to the courses’ landscaping, layout, etc.
- Assist in managing labor and other department expenses to reach profitability goals.
- Coordinate, oversee and direct employees on construction and special maintenance projects.
- Account for tools and equipment issued to staff; issue and inventory supplies, uniforms, tools etc.
- Respond and resolve guest, member, and employee concerns in a timely fashion.
- Assist with irrigation efficiencies such as; hand watering and taking moisture meter readings daily
- Perform other related duties as assigned or required to assist crew
Other Duties:
- Maintain department bulletin boards and scheduling when needed.
- Review equipment maintenance logs.
- Conduct regular department meetings.
- Maintain and ensure that all staff is properly accounted for uniforms, PPE, and tools issued to team members.
- Regularly follow up to emails and other resort staff needs as necessary on a daily basis.
- Current on networking of golf courses on the Big Island as well as nationally.
- Keep office clean.
Working Conditions:
- Normal office conditions.
- Outdoors on golf course in various weather conditions.
Work Hours:
- Must be able to work schedule set by the Director of Golf Maintenance or Superintendent.
- Must be able to work more than 50 hours per week.
Equipment Use:
- Proficient in the use of a computer and with the resort’s word, spreadsheet and other required software, i.e. irrigation system, purchase order programs, and Microsoft outlook.
- Telephone and radio.
- Ability to use various office equipment including but not limited to calculators, photocopiers and facsimile machines.
- Operate department vehicles, utility and golf carts.
- Must be able to operate and handle all golf maintenance equipment. Small sprayer, hand tools, etc., will be part of the daily use when needed.
Mental and Physical Demands:
- Able to prioritize and organize workload to ensure deadlines is met.
- Able to manage stressful and challenging situations.
- Able to stand and walk/sit in cart to oversee golf maintenance operations.
- Able to bend, kneel, crouch, reach to check equipment or inspect course.
- Able to sit at a desk to do administrative duties.
Communication Demands:
- Must have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing to employees, managers, vendors and guests/clients.
- Ability to communicate over the phone or radio.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
- 3 years related work experience.
- Skills to effectively supervise and manage the department and meet goals.
- Ability to multi-task.
- A.S. Degree in Agronomy, preferred or equivalent in related work experience.
- Commercial Certification to purchase pesticides, preferred.
- Driver’s license when operating company vehicle
