General Function: 

Under the direction of the COO and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the District Executive Director is responsible for the management, oversight and success of a multi-faceted, family-oriented operation.  Key areas of responsibility include: build/maintain robust center advisory boards, grow the assigned center’s Annual Impact Fund, build community relations/partnerships, effective communication and coordination between center program lines and with association program line leaders/supervisors. The District Executive collaboratively delivers high quality programs and services, while growing enrollment.  Oversight of effective/efficient center business systems consistent with association practices and staff coaching/development will also be key in this role. 

 

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience preferred.  Y-USA Multi-Team Leader Certification (or equivalent) required within two years and must begin working towards certification within 6 months.
  2. Minimum of five or more years of experience in business operations, community involvement, relationship building, program/business line development, staff selection, supervision and development, and day-to-day enterprise management preferred.
  3. Strong skills in fiscal management and financial development including annual impact fund required.
  4. Highly motivated with the consistent ability to meet or exceed goals, cultivate and retain members, volunteers and program participants.
  5. Ability to quickly build rapport and develop effective relationships with members, volunteers, program prospects and others to achieve goals.
  6. Demonstrated ability to multi-task and adapt to changing contexts and priorities.
  7. Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to identify and leverage relevant data to use in planning and decision-making.
  8. Ability to understand, adapt to and interact with diverse people, teams, perspectives and cultures.
  9. Proficient in using email, Internet, and other PC-based applications (e.g. Microsoft Office, customer service/tracking applications) with the ability to learn and adapt to new technology.
  10. Certification in CPR/ First Aid/AED/02 required within 60 days of hire.
  11. Complete and maintain required trainings to include: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment.
  12. Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check.

Essential Functions:

  • Supports the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
  • Actively participates in association task forces, committees and/or other groups to promote center unity through association policies, strategies and goals.

Development/Fundraising

  • Assists with the establishment of annual impact fund, major gifts, and/or endowment association goals, and achieves annual impact goal through the implementation and delivery of best practices.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with current and potential funding sources, both private and public.
  • Understands the pressing community needs and generates support for our cause and proven solutions for meaningful, enduring impact and stronger communities. 

 

Board Development

  • Collaborates with volunteer-led Center Advisory Boards and committees to educate the community about the work of the YMCA and its mission. 
  • Engages, recruits and develops key community leaders for the Center Advisory Boards. Maintains contacts with political, business, and civic leaders, as well as community groups and schools to develop a solid volunteer structure.
  • Represents and promotes the YMCA in the local community and develops positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community agencies in service delivery area.

Fiscal Management

  • Manages/provides oversight to center budgets, managing to/within revenue and expense targets.
  • Prepares and updates revenue and expense forecasts to center budgets as needed.

 

Membership & Program Quality/Growth

  • Achieves all established goals and objectives set forth in the strategic plan as well as association goals, including net promoter scores.
  • Ensures all YMCA standards and best practices are implemented and followed.  Applies YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to best practices, emergency procedures, medical and disciplinary situations and child abuse prevention.
  • Ensures all staff members are properly trained and prepared for emergency situations. This includes implementing and following training requirements in addition to ensuring proper reporting of all incidents/accidents according to risk management procedures.
  • Ensures the safety and maintenance of high-quality facilities, grounds and equipment.

 

Team Leadership 

  • Provides leadership to all center staff members; works collaboratively with program line leaders to hire, develop, motivate, influence and retain a committed team passionate about the YMCA's mission, safety and service to members.
  • Provides leadership to all center staff members to create and maintain meaningful and impactful relationships with the members, program participants, volunteers and community leaders. 
  • Ensures center-based full and part-time staff possess the needed certifications for safe and effective delivery of programs and services.
  • Implements and monitors the risk management plan, policies and procedures for the center.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with YMCA policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work.
  • Works collaboratively with program line leaders to select and supervise staff in related areas: develops annual benchmarks that address goals and objectives of both the Center and the Association.

Skills and Ability Requirements:

  1. Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents. 
  2. Ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints. 
  3. Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.  Must be able to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as budget preparation and program planning.
  4. Ability to reason and define difficult problems with limited direction as to means and results. 
  5. Ability to meet the physical demands of this position, which include mobility for touring facilities, travel to conferences, and participating in promotional and special events sponsored by the Association.
  6. Ability to work and guide others through problem solving and center management.
