General Function:

 

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for assisting in planning and staffing of the assigned Aquatics programsThe Aquatics Coordinator must abide by the requirements set by the Y-USA Aquatics Best Practices. With an emphasis on ensuring the highest quality service to members and guests, the Aquatics Coordinator will work closely with other center leaders in efforts to welcome, connect, support, and engage all members and staff.

Qualifications:

 

  1. Minimum of 21 years of age.
  2. Red Cross or YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification (Trainer Level Certification preferred).
  3. Red Cross Lifeguarding or YMCA Lifeguarding certification. (Cross over to YMCA Lifeguarding within 6 months of hire)
  4. Minimum of one (1) year experience in the following preferred: Lifeguard Supervision, Risk Management and safety programming.
  5. Minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience preferred.
  6. Certification through the YMCA, American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA), or USA Swimming is preferred.
  7. Certification in YMCA Swim Official Level 1.
  8. Certification in Principles of YMCA Competitive Swimming and Diving is required within the first year of employment.
  9. Certified Pool Operator certification within 6 months of hire.
  10. Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter.
  11. Current CPR/First Aid/AED/O2.
  12. Strong organizational skills, communication skills (written and verbal), and human relation skills.
  13. Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check.

 

Essential Functions: 

 

  1. Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
  2. Promote a professional work environment through character development by modeling the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  3. Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
  4. Assist in ensuring all assigned aquatics programs meets YMCA standards for quality and safety.
  5. Assist in recruitment, hiring and training staff and volunteers for all assigned aquatics programs.
  6. Assist in ensuring staff certifications and records are filed for all aquatics staff and maintained according to association standards.
  7. Assist in conducting monthly in-service trainings for lifeguard staff with a focus on skills and procedures.
  8. Assist in conducting and maintaining records of announced and unannounced emergency/mock rescue drills for all lifeguards.
  9. Assist in creating and maintaining a cleaning and preventative maintenance schedule for Lifeguards to complete during appropriate times and according to safety ratios.
  10. Ensure measurements for pH and chlorine are checked and documented. Report any inconsistencies or problems with chemical measurements to the supervisor. Assist with steps to maintain proper water chemistry.
  11. Assist in providing quarterly Lifeguard certifications courses, preferably through the YMCA.
  12. Should be visible on pool deck at all scheduled times ensuring that all lifeguards are rescue ready and maintain their 180 degree scan of pool/zone at all times.
  13. Be familiar with the entire aquatic environment and on each shift make sure all emergency equipment is available and ready for use.  Ensure that aquatic environment is free of obstructions and safe for participant use. 
  14. Maintain appropriate lifeguard to swimmer ratio.
  15. Perform chemical checks when not guarding.
  16. Ensure that lifeguards are at least 18 years of age to enter the pump room, and must be adequately trained to perform chemical related duties and pump room maintenance.
  17. Enforce all pool rules with all patrons in a fair, polite, and consistent manner.
  18. Supervise the general facilities on-site (swim team equipment and pool use) to ensure proper pool and equipment use and safety.
  19. Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  20. Wear staff uniform and name tag, or professional attire when appropriate.
  21. Follow department Association Standards.
  22. Ensure all members, guests, and program participants are in a safe environment and actively follow center Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
  23. Act as a leader in emergency situations. Report any accidents or incidents according to Emergency Communication Action Plan.
  24. Carry out other related duties as deemed necessary by the Aquatics Department and center operations to ensure an excellent member experience.

  1. Ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints. 
  2. Ability to pass lifeguard water test and meet requirements of ongoing drills.
  3. Must be able to remain alert.
  4. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  5. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  6. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  7. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  8. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
  9. Ability to supervise staff.
