POSITION PURPOSE
Under direct supervision of the Aquatic Leader, the Lifeguard is expected to ensure a safe, clean and enjoyable aquatic environment for YMCA members and participants; ensure safety of all individuals in the pool area by being on deck, watching all activity in and around the pool, walking around the pool area, constantly remaining alert while on duty, enforcing all pool rules, recognize emergency situations, rescue individuals is stress, perform emergency care and contact emergency assistance when required; adhere to and enforce all YMCA Aquatic Safety Standards at all times.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Ensure safety and prevent injuries by supervising the pool area.
- Scan pool and pool area every 10 seconds and react immediately to signs of individuals in distress.
- Maintain all aquatics/pools standards and rules. Ensure no distraction or interference with the ability to hear or see signs of distress.
- Ensure that pool staffing is within YMCA standards before leaving the area or performing maintenance items. Ensure security upon arrival and departure.
- Administer first aid to victims using OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Universal Precautions. Provide immediate care to sustain life until Emergency Medical Service arrives.
- Maintain current certifications. Maintain physical fitness. Perform endurance swims and rescue procedures upon request.
- Participate as a part of the aquatics staff team in providing a safe and enjoyable environment. Respect others by arriving on time and in accordance with schedule.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
- Provide excellent service to members and participants.
- Communicate all pool rules and ensure that you are accessible and identifiable.
- Maintain pool logs, incident/accident reports, locker room checks, and other documents as required.
- Perform pool maintenance duties in accordance with OSHA Hazardous Materials Precautions. Hose down pool deck, put away all equipment. Perform water quality testing.
- Ensure safety and cleanliness in pool area.
- Inform supervisor and staff of equipment need, water testing results and temperature.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
ROLE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 16 years of age with current ARC Lifeguard/Water Park, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Administering Emergency Oxygen certifications.
- Ability to use water chemistry test kit.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to communicate information, instructions, and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations between staff, members, children, and volunteers accurately. The ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling; ability to move 20 pounds independently and utilize the “buddy system” or team lift for heavier items. The person needs to occasionally move about the program area to access materials, members/program participants, emergency equipment, etc. Constantly positions self to maintain program materials, including under desks, in closets, and on top of shelves. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to observe details at close range of objects where they actually are within a distance of 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The physical environment requires the employee to possibly work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure such as hearing protection and rubber gloves.
Acquire and maintain the following certifications:
- CPR/AED/O2 (valid 2 years with exception of Aquatics to renew annually), First Aid (valid 2 years) obtained through the American Red Cross
- Requisite OSHA online trainings (valid 1 year unless otherwise noted)
- Mandated Reporter Training (valid 5 years)
- Additional training and development specific to your role as reference in onboarding packet.
