Process Control Specialist

Function and Scope
Independently evaluates, selects and applies standard process control and E&I techniques, procedures, and criteria using judgment in making majority of adaptations and modifications to mill quality control systems.
Duties and Responsibilities
- QCS System Support - Perform complex hardware and software configuration changes (includes additions, deletions, & modifications). Provides technical maintenance support to backup and restore all configurations. Performing field service tasks, identifying technical issues, and performing analysis.
- Maintenance Support - (QCS process area callouts, QCS Weekend Duty, I/O & process troubleshooting) Provide accurate and reliable technical support as required for performance of control applications for key operating parameters. Preparing maintenance activities and ensuring that all parts, materials, and equipment are available and of appropriate quantity and quality for maintenance activities.
- Production Support - Process troubleshooting, controls support for operators/operations management, performance monitoring of key operating parameters for quality control systems. Provides day-to-day support of operators and their interface to the quality control systems.
- Capital Support – Able to provide technical support for scope development, I/O installation, control logic changes, commissioning, process startup, and post-startup monitoring of control upgrade performance.
- Analytical Support - Use of PARCview data historian, Excel & other analytical tools to perform standard to complex analysis of key operating parameter for control applications. Monitoring of historian tag database for additions, deletions, modifications (example: loop modes, interlocks, troubleshooting, tag updates, etc).
- Network support – Use analytical software to evaluate network configuration and performance. Be capable of identifying and correcting network issues.
Qualifications
- Education and Experience
- Associate’s degree in an engineering related field and 2+ years of electrical/electronics, instrumentation or process control related work/military experience required
- Desired 3 to 5 years of experience with QCS or PLC configuration and Process troubleshooting and optimization
- Proficiency with electrical test equipment such as voltmeters or multi-meters
- Mechanical/Electrical aptitude including a basic understanding of electrical theory and electrical safety
- Ability to read electrical drawings and utilize for troubleshooting electrical/electronic systems
- Competent with appropriate Microsoft/PC software and hardware functionality
- Desired Knowledge and Competencies
- ABB 800xA control system configuration and troubleshooting skills [all facets]
- ABB Network Platform scanner hardware, operations, and troubleshooting
- Ethernet network evaluation and troubleshooting
- Exposure to VMWare vSphere and virtual infrastructure
- Quality Control Fundamentals
- Demonstrated knowledge of cross-direction and machine-direction control tuning
- Demonstrated knowledge of electronic circuits, electronic schematics, and troubleshooting
- Demonstrated knowledge of motor control and mechanical assemblies
- Demonstrated knowledge of valve controls and troubleshooting
- Production Process Knowledge
- Demonstrated knowledge of the paper making process
- Demonstrated knowledge of control applications directly affecting paper production’s key operating parameters
- PARCview Historian skills
- Able to trend history & build adhoc comparison trends
- Able to build complex trends to determine straightforward cause and effects
- Able to use PARCview to determine more complex variable interactions & relationships
- Able to use PARCview to incorporate data into more complex control applications
- Able to use PARCview to monitor performance of control applications in operating area
- Communication Skills –
- Verbal – Able to present (& sell) ideas & information verbally to hourly, salaried, and management levels in the organization
- Written – Able to present (& sell) ideas & information in written forms such as memos, e-mails, monthly reports, and MOCs
- Both – Able to present ideas and information to an audience of peers or management in a more formal meeting environment
