Behavior Health Specialist - Residential Treatment Facility

Job Summary:
A Behavior Health Specialist (BHS) working in the Residential Treatment Facility Program (RTF) works with high risk adolescents (ages 12-21) in an inpatient mental health treatment setting. The setting is a sub-hospitalization licensed by the NYS Office of Mental Health. Adolescents served require 24/7 supervision while they engage in trauma resolution therapies and repair relationships with family to promote successful reintegration to their home communities. BHS are responsible for providing a variety of behavioral interventions and trauma sensitive techniques to ensure that the adolescents maintain safety of self and others. Providing role modeling, facilitating development of activities of daily living, and promoting the development of age appropriate social skills are also critical aspects of the position.
- Responsible for the direct supervision of the clients at all times.
- Teaches clients living skills such as decision making, personal control, interpersonal communication and problem solving, dressing, grooming and eating.
- Instructs and monitors to ensure that the daily routine, structure and habilitative programming is maintained and all related standards are met.
- Supervises and assists in transporting clients as required.
- Manages a clean and safe work environment.
- Assists in the planning and implementation of the treatment plan.
- Interacts with clients in ways that are therapeutic, respectful and trauma sensitive.
- Utilizes preventative and de-escalation techniques that are consistent with Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI)
- Completes all required paperwork (e.g.: ICMP, BIP, monthly summaries, daily logs etc.) including electronic record entry.
- Performs any other duties listed on the program specific responsibility checklist assigned by the supervisor.

Education & Experience:
- 60 credit hours completed AND currently enrolled in 4-year degree program in Human Services or related field
Or
- Associate’s Degree
Or
- A High School diploma/GED with one year of paid child care experience
Required License/Registration/Certification:
- Valid NYS Driver’s License
- TCI Certification (Training provided by OLVHS)
Physical Requirements:
- The overall nature of the position is sedentary requiring little physical effort with occasional light physical exertion required. There is little, if any, exposure to environmental conditions.
- The frequent physical demands of the position are standing, walking, climbing, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and eye/hand/foot coordination.
- The occasional physical demands of the position are lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, and feeling.
