Welder - Technical Services
Section 1 - Position Summary
This position performs various types of weld preparation, welding and weld finishing operations in the maintenance of machinery such as pumps, air conditioning units, compressors, and other equipment. This position consists mainly of working mobile from a company vehicle. Some in shop work is necessary.
Section 2 - Major Responsibilities
1. Responsible for performing needed welding jobs on equipment and machinery.
2. Monitors and performs routine preventive maintenance and repair to existing machinery, buildings and equipment.
3. Will be called out for emergency repairs of water, wastewater pipelines and equipment
4. Fabricates miscellaneous items from raw material to improve or better NTMWD Equipment and infrastructure.
5. Maintains record of work using District provided software, logging their time, materials and equipment usage.
6. Cooperates with other departments to ensure work is done efficiently and correctly.
7. Observes safe work practices through proper use of safety equipment and procedures including permit required confined space entry and lock out tag out.
8. Works with and alongside Mechanical Staff to complete assigned jobs
9. Maintains a clean work area and participates in organization of tools, equipment and shop/truck.
10. Performs mechanical duties as required or needed.
11. May be asked to assist other departments during emergency repairs or routine maintenance.
12. Participates in a rotational "ONCALL" shift status to respond to NTMWD repairs outside of normal business hours must be able to work overtime when needed
Section 3 - Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
1. Working knowledge of Welding practices including SMAW (Stick), GMAW (MiG), GTAW (Tig), along with using a cutting torch safely and effectively.
2. Must understand and have ability to operate all welding equipment including welders, plasma cutters, torches and metal cutting tools safely.
3. Must have the basic knowledge and understanding of how to use a computer
4. Must become proficient In the use of the District Computerized Maintenance Management System
5. Knowledge of wire and filler materials applications for various steel alloys, aluminum, and some exotic materials.
6. Must have the ability to read operations and maintenance manuals, schematics, blueprints and safety data sheets.
Section 4 - Education and Experience
1. One-year experience in various forms of welding, including but not limited to; fabrication, pipeline and structural welding.
2. Must be able to obtain a Certified Welder certification through the American Welding Society or an accredited source within 12 months.
3. Requires a valid Texas Driver's License.
4. Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
Section 5 - Environmental Factors, Activity Levels and Equipment
This position requires continuous physical exertion often of a strenuous nature. Lifts or pulls/pushes 50 pounds on a daily basis and up to 100 pounds on a weekly basis in order to repair and service pumps, motors and machinery while using various hand tools and equipment. Working conditions Include exposure to weather, odor, noise, chemical hazards, gases and dust. Hand and power tools including drill press and lathe, welding equipment, emergency lighting equipment, safety equipment and crane.
