Section 1 – Position Summary
The Industrial Mechanic Apprentice assists the mechanics and welders in the maintenance, diagnosing, repairing, installing, and testing, and calibration of water, wastewater and solid waste related mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment. This position will support multiple facilities with varying processes, equipment and functional requirements. This position is given specific instruction, and work is performed under direct supervision.
Section 2 – Major Responsibilities
- Assists and support mechanics and welders in the installation, maintenance, diagnosing and repair of pumps, motors, gear boxes, valves, piping, actuators, air compressors and generators.
- Assists and support mechanics and welders in the installation, maintenance, diagnosing and repair of pneumatics, hydraulics, and gear driven equipment.
- Assists and support mechanics and welders in performing basic tasks including greasing of equipment, parts assembly and disassembly, sandblasting, grinding, and cutting.
- Assists and supports mechanics and welders with the troubleshooting, diagnosis, and resolves variable and highly complex non routine water or wastewater facility machinery, piping and equipment problems
- Demonstrates technical aptitude with mechanical systems and components.
- Applies principles and practices of ASME, OSHA, AWWA and STLE and understands or has the ability to learn the differences in the various types of oil and greases used in an industrial environment.
- Performs preventive and predictive maintenance and maintains tools, parts, equipment and materials requirements and inventory for assigned projects.
- Performs basic mathematical calculations.
- Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, plans, and manufacturers’ specifications.
- Operates industrial tools and machinery including Lathe, Mill, drill press, band saw, welders, torches, plasma cutters, forklift, sky track, scissor lifts and multiple power tools related to maintenance equipment.
- Learns and applies proper safety procedures and protocols in all work environments.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area at all times.
- Demonstrates a continuous effort to improve skill levels.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships and public relations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Section 3 – Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Must have the ability to comprehend, carry out and administer written and oral instruction.
- Must possess knowledge of basic mechanical principles and concepts.
- Normal visual color discrimination.
- Strong willingness to learn and develop skills in the industrial mechanical trade.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Physical ability to perform duties such as lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
- Willingness to work overtime as required.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to report to work on time, maintain a good attendance record, and work all designated work schedules.
Section 4 – Education and Experience
- Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License.
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
Section 5 – Environmental Factors, Activity Levels and Equipment
This position requires continuous physical exertion often of a strenuous nature. Lifts or pulls/pushes 50 pounds on a daily basis and up to 100 pounds on a weekly basis in order to repair and service various mechanical components, while using various hand tools and equipment. Working conditions include exposure to high voltage electricity, frequent exposure to inclement weather, wastewater, mechanical, electrical, chemical, and confined space hazards with offensive fumes, excessive noise, heavy traffic, and animals, snakes, and poisonous insects. Hand and power tools including pneumatic equipment, impact drills, saws, emergency lighting equipment and safety equipment. May be required to comply with requirements as specified in applicable regulations for personal protective equipment, including clearance for use of respiratory protection and other associated equipment. Also operates a company vehicle on a daily basis. Will be required to work hours other than regular schedule such as short notice/unscheduled overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call, and rotating shifts.
