Role Summary:
This person will report directly to the Development Engineering Manager and is responsible for leading and implementing research and development projects with internal teams and external customers.
This role will cover acquiring key electrochemical data for production quality control and new product development. This includes all activities related to coin cell building, including slurry formulation, electrode production, electrode measurements, cell building, robotically assisted cell building, cell cycling, and cycle data processing and reporting. This work will be performed in the dedicated coin cell laboratory at the mass production site near downtown Chattanooga.
The Electrochemical Engineer will collaborate with colleagues at other NOVONIX facilities, initiating new testing processes, and implementing best practices for continuous improvement. These include optimization of coin cell process flow, improved data collection and reporting through the data solutions tool, optimizing coin cell build and provide feedback on material trends and observations.
Responsibilities include:
• Leading and implementing internal and customer battery prototyping and testing projects including stakeholder communication, experimental design, battery testing, analysis, reporting, and meeting end of program deliverables
• Scheduling and delegating tasks to other members of the project team
• Regularly providing technical feedback and project updates to Development Engineering Manager and Quality Assurance Manager
• Working in a glovebox to mix electrolyte formulations, build coin cells and fill prototype cells, and perform diagnostic disassembly of cells
• Front-to-back experimental activities, including material design, pilot-scale synthesis, and electrochemical evaluation
• Working with internal and external data tools, analyzing data and generating reports
• Hold regular meetings to discuss results, schedules, and project plans
• Meeting with internal and external stakeholders to discuss results
• Regular maintenance, troubleshooting, and documentation of experimental equipment and procedures
• Perform data analysis correlating various process and material data with electrochemical results
• Other duties as assigned
You are:
• Bachelor's degree in chemistry, physics, or related engineering program
• Minimum 3 years of work experience in electrochemical or lithium-ion research
• A team player with a predisposition to collaborate
• Strong data analysis skills
• Knowledge of common battery testing equipment (Maccor, Neware, Biologic, etc.)
• A highly motivated self-starter who takes initiative
• Resourceful when it comes to solving problems
• A critical thinker able to manage complex information
• Able to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Confident and able to exercise sound judgment
• Proficient in Microsoft 365
Extra awesome if you also have:
• Master's degree in chemistry, physics, or related engineering program
• Experience with pilot/prototype cell manufacturing
• Scripting knowledge (python, matlab, etc.)
• Experience with design of experiment (DOE) software
• Database design experience
• Experience with lithium-ion battery testing
