JOB SUMMARY

The Associate Engineer is responsible for a variety of traffic and transportation engineering functions for the purpose of assisting the Capital Projects and Transportation Division with project and program management.

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:      

  • Manages various EDS programs, such as the Sidewalk Capital Improvement Project selection and construction, the Town’s annual Traffic Calming Program and the Town’s annual Traffic AADT Count Program;
  • Assists with and manages assigned CIP and CMP project development tasks;
  • Assists with traffic studies to include safety audits, warrant analysis, and other related studies;
  • Assists with selection and potential management of Transportation Sales Tax (TST) and Charleston County Transportation Committee (CTC) projects;
  • Reviews and updates Town codes and regulations pertaining to parking restrictions;
  • Assists with on-going implementation of the Town’s Street Sign Replacement Program, to include preparation of plans in GIS, recommendations for sign removal/replacement, and field evaluations and inspections;
  • Responds to citizen requests for information or concerns related to transportation or traffic issues;
  • Performs other related assigned duties.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or construction science and management with 0-2 years of work experience in the Transportation or Traffic discipline(s) or equivalent combination of education, experience and licensure;
  • Possesses an EIT certification with intentions to obtain a Professional Engineer (“PE”) license within 4 years.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of Transportation and Traffic Engineering;
  • Knowledge of industry design standards such as the MUTCD;
  • Knowledge of interpreting engineering plans and specifications;
  • Project management skills desirable;
  • Ability to establish good working relationships with contractors, developers, and other agencies;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The work requires some agility and physical strength, such as moving in or about construction sites or over rough terrain or standing or walking most of the work period. Occasionally, work may require lifting heavy objects and carrying them (up to 30 lbs.). There may be need to stretch and reach to retrieve materials.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:     

The work environment involves exposure to intermittent machine or related noise or a combination of unpleasant elements such as odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt, or grease. It may include work under typical shop conditions or outdoor work that is suspended when weather conditions are poor. Work may involve general cleaning, occasional work at heights or in confined or cramped quarters, or work around machinery and its moving parts. Work may also involve occasional mental stress, such as completing several unrelated tasks within a relatively short period of time.
