Space Center Houston is a space exploration learning destination dedicated to revealing how science and humanity power space exploration through meaningful, moving experiences about people and the courage, innovation, and teamwork they use to expand the boundaries of what's possible. We inspire guests of all ages to connect with the significance of space exploration as incredible feats of human spaceflight continue to bring joy and wonder to the world. Owned and operated by the nonprofit Manned Space Flight Education Foundation, we are the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center and a Smithsonian affiliate.

We are currently seeking a full-time Guest Technician responsible for repair, operation, and maintenance of Space Center Houston’s audio/visual presentation equipment, show PC systems, cabling infrastructure and theater production systems through the direction of the IT Director. Responsibilities and qualifications are shown below:

POSITION RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Maintain operation, repair, and maintenance of audio visual presentation systems including, but not limited to:
    • Cinema Grade Theatre Projection Systems
    • Dimmer Control/Lighting Systems
    • Tram Audio/Video Systems
    • Plaza Audio/Video Systems
    • Telecommunication Systems
    • Digital Media Players
    • Conferencing & Training Equipment
  • Maintain operation, repair, and maintenance of SCH’s all guest facing technologies including, but not limited to:
    • Brightsign Programming
    • Gateway POS System
    • Alcorn, McBride V-16 Show Controller Programming
    • Morphis Simulator
    • Building/Exhibit Interactive Kiosks
    • Informational Kiosks
  • Operate video editing/streaming hardware and software. Including, but not limited to:
    • Streaming live events to services such as Ustream.
    • Filming live events and speeches to be used as training materials.
    • Editing video at the request of other SCH departments.
  • Safely and effectively operate one and two person lifts in excess of 70 feet in the air.
  • Precisely and safely navigate one and two person lifts around existing building infrastructure.
  • Safely change and handle highly fragile and explosive projector lamps.
  • Share in the cross-training of other technicians in technical duties to promote job growth.
  • Perform administrative duties including, but not limited to:
    • Purchase supplies and equipment for maintenance, repair, or replacement of audio/visual systems, facility, and show systems, and projection systems as deemed necessary by management.
    • Pick up parts/equipment locally for emergency repairs or pending needs.
    • Support Special Event activities as requested by other SCH departments to ensure safe performance of all equipment while providing an enhanced event experience.
    • Implement overall safety and loss prevention procedures for all on-stage and backstage areas.
  • Operate as front line technical contact for third party clients including, but not limited to:
    • Supervising technical run-throughs/dress rehearsals
    • Overseeing client equipment operation and integration into our system(s)
    • Adaptation of room/facility technical equipment and/or services to fit   
      client/event needs
    • Coordinating and running audio/video/computer equipment during events
  • Other duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate.  Completion of college level courses in computer science, electronics or a related field preferred.
  • 2+ years related work experience strongly preferred.
  • Work or academic experience with Audio Control Consoles, Lighting Systems, Video Switching, Projection, and Audio/Visual Presentation Set-up.  Experience with video production and editing preferred.  Hands-on studio or booth experience (particularly in a show environment) also preferred.
  • Work or academic experience with PC Hardware, PC Software, and Systems Configuration.
  • Work or academic experience with Windows, Android and iOS Operating Systems. Experience with Mac OS X is a plus.
  • Willingness and aptitude to learn the following: Show Control Programming, Lighting & Dimmer Control Systems, Audio Control Systems, Video Streaming/Production/ Editing Systems, Gateway POS System and SCH operational software.
  • Enthusiastic and outgoing personality.
  • Must be service oriented with customer guest service skills.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization.
  • Must have maturity to work with little or no supervision.
  • Must have the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License and the ability to successfully pass a MVR, drug screen and background check.
  • Works well under pressure at times due to time factors.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairways, and negotiate close spaces with a maximum of 18” clearance and regularly lift weight of approximately 35 lbs. alone.
  • Ability to kneel, bend and work at floor level as needed.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
