Owned and operated by the nonprofit Manned Space Flight Education Foundation, we are the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center and a Smithsonian affiliate.

We are seeking a full-time Mechanical Technician responsible for maintaining equipment through preventive maintenance, routine inspections, and assists in repairs, work orders and minor mechanical projects. Responsibilities and qualifications are shown below:

POSITION RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Maintain, diagnose and repair Space Center Houston’s vehicles, equipment, building and exhibits.
  • Complete work orders delegated through the designated supervisor.
  • Assists mechanics/specialty trades with repairs, replacement, and construction projects.
  • Completes preventive maintenance checks on a determined basis.
  • Picks up parts locally for emergency repairs or pending needs.
  • Assists in all special projects as directed by supervisor.
  • Reports daily to the designated lead for daily work orders and/or special projects.
  • Responds to emergency calls.
  • Completes all necessary maintenance related records and productivity forms.
  • Available and capable for being on-call duty when required.
  • All other duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of mechanical maintenance with an emphasis on vehicle repair (automotive components, internal combustion engines, air actuated braking systems and 12V electrical systems) as well as a general background in mechanical equipment.  A minimum of 3 years’ experience preferred. Some experience with propane fueled engine and automatic drive trains would be helpful.  Hands-on institutional, motor pool, or automotive repair shop experience preferred.
  • Enthusiastic and outgoing personality.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate well.
  • Must be able to work with little or no supervision.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Must have a State of Texas Driver’s License and pass a drug screening test.
  • Must be in physical condition satisfactory to allow climbing ladders and lifting weights up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to read gauges, blueprints and instructions.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and holidays. 
  • Minimal travel may be required as needed.
