Psychiatric Registered Nurse

Department of Health & Human Services

Hourly Range: $ $33.65 - $42.12

 

 

Job Summary: The Psych Registered Nurse is responsible for providing psych care and ensure the safety of the youth residing at the Milwaukee County Youth Detention Center and the Residential Care Center for Children and Youth. The primary focus of this position will be to work with youth who are experiencing psychiatric disorders, mental health issues, behavioral problems and those who are in crisis.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct psychiatric screenings of youth who enter the two centers to identify those with significant mental health conditions, those that are experiencing crisis, or are at risk for suicide. Communicate with parents or guardians of youth to help identify any noted mental health conditions.
  • Obtain and review client prescribed medication with providers to give authorized medication to youth. Order medication refills. Collaborate with medical team regarding youth's medication regimen.
  • Screen youth for suicidal ideations and implement suicide protocols. Assess youth on suicide watch daily and create self-harm safety plans.
  • Accept daily psych service requests. Respond to emergency situations within Behavioral and Medical centers. Assess youth with reported sleep disturbances and initiate sleep monitoring.
  • Communicate with system partners such as case managers, Human Service Worker’s, advocates, and other involved parties to provide the best care. Support youth in times of loss and grief as well as contact family and care team to facilitate healing. Report all instances of alleged sexual abuse or neglect.
  • Coordinator staff training regarding suicide prevention and precautions. Assist in developing suicide policy and procedures. Facilitate Youth Correctional Officer’s orientations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Authorized to work in the United States. Must become a Wisconsin resident within six (6mos.) months.
  • High School Diploma/GED Equivalent or higher is required.
  • At least one (1) year of experience as a Registered Nurse. Three years of RN work experience is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Registered Nurse licensure.
  • Intermediate knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Must be able and willing to work first and second shift.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing service management; ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise nursing services on an assigned tour of duty or for a major division of a mental health facility; ability to effectively participate in staff development programs; ability to work effectively and harmoniously with patients, personnel, and others; ability to lift, carry, pull, and push up to 25 lbs.

NOTE:  This original application is open to permanent residents of the United States. Appointee must establish residency in the state of Wisconsin within six months of start date and maintain such residency during incumbencyIn accordance with Section 11, Rule 3 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
