POSITION SUMMARY
This position performs all accounting functions for Mitsui USA (MUSA) and/or its Group Companies. This includes quarterly closing procedures, preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and reports, preparation of government reports, monitoring of business process operations and assistance in audits of reporting packages and consolidated financial statements. This also includes responsibility for analyzing certain accounts of P/L and B/S of MUSA and/or its Group Companies. This also includes providing support and advice relating to accounting to business departments and Group Companies. This position is also required to train new accounting personnel.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plans, performs, and completes quarterly closing procedures, including posting manual entries, preparing various reconciliations and analyzing the accounts to identify any unusual fluctuations and detect misstatements. Obtains necessary supporting data to prepare the entries and maintains appropriate documentation.
- Prepares and reviews assigned areas of the stand-alone or consolidated financial statements of MUSA and/or its Group Companies on a quarterly basis, including annual financial reports.
- Prepares and reviews required reports for management of MUSA and Mitsui Tokyo and responds to their inquiries in a timely manner.
- Provides required information and necessary coordination to the external auditors in conjunction with their audits of the reporting packages, financial statements, and internal control.
- Performs monitoring of business departments’ compliance to the accounting policies and the internal control procedures.
- Provides solutions to other departments and Group Companies when they have questions or problems in implementing company accounting policies and procedures.
- Obtains information and performs research on accounting and reporting issues. Assists his/her managers in determination of proper accounting treatment and procedures. Prepares documentation and communicates with appropriate parties.
- Prepares and reviews various government census reports.
- Supervises other staff in Accounting Department and may assist his/her managers in completing performance evaluation of team members.
- Participates in projects as assigned by managers.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Knowledge Areas:
- Good understanding of IFRS, accounting principles, and internal controls.
- Knowledge in trading business and investment transaction is a plus.
Technical / Communication Skills:
- Excellent mathematical and analytical skills.
- Must have speed and accuracy in meeting closings and deadlines.
- Intermediate Word and Excel (including knowledge of basic formulas; pivot tables, vlookup at least).
- Ability to communicate with and advise colleagues in business departments and Group Companies on transactions (i.e., identifying discrepancies).
- Position requires use of several purchased and internally developed software packages; knowledge of SAP is a plus.
Experience:
- Minimum four (4) years experience with a Big 4 or second tier public accounting firm or minimum five (5) years experience with a mid-size firm.
- Bachelors Degree in Accounting.
- CPA preferred but not required.
- Should possess the ability to adapt to a cross-cultural environment.
- Prior management experience is a plus
