GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
The purpose of an aerobics instructor is to lead and motivate participants in safe and effective aerobic exercise activities, such as aerobics classes, to help them improve their overall fitness levels. An aerobics instructor is responsible for developing and teaching aerobics classes, providing appropriate warm-ups and cool-downs, monitoring participants during the class, and providing guidance and encouragement to help them reach their fitness goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and Lead Group Exercise Classes: Design and deliver safe, effective, and fun group exercise classes for participants of varying fitness levels and abilities. Classes may include but are not limited to cardio exercises dance fitness, strength training, yoga, Pilates, HIT, and more
- Provide Instruction and Demonstration: Instruct participants on proper exercise techniques, form, and alignment to ensure a safe and effective workout. Demonstrate exercises and movements as needed, offering modifications for different skill levels.
- Motivate and Encourage Participants: Create a positive and inclusive atmosphere during classes, motivating participants to push themselves and reach their fitness goals. Provide encouragement, feedback, and support to help participants stay engaged and motivated.
- Ensure Safety and Risk Management: Maintain a safe exercise environment by monitoring participant movements, correcting improper form, and ensuring equipment is set up and used correctly. Follow all safety protocols and guidelines to prevent injuries.
- Stay Current on Fitness Trends: Stay informed about the latest fitness trends, techniques, and best practices in group exercise instruction. Continuously expand your knowledge and skills through professional development opportunities.
- Build Relationships: Develop positive relationships with participants, providing personalized attention and support to help them achieve their fitness objectives. Foster a sense of community and camaraderie among class members.
- Assist with Program Promotion: Collaborate with the Programming/Marketing Director to promote group exercise programs and special events. Help attract new participants and retain existing members through marketing initiatives and outreach efforts.
- Maintain Class Records: Keep accurate records of class attendance, participant feedback, and any relevant information needed for program evaluation and improvement. Provide regular reports to the Programming/Marketing Director as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of planning, coordinating and conducting a diversified aerobics program. Knowledge of equipment maintenance requirements in aerobics.
- CPR and/or Standard First aid required.
- Ability to present ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
- Ability to appear to work on time and notify appropriate individual if unable to work.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with other employees and the public.
- Attends required training sessions and meets with the Aquatics Manager or Program Coordinator upon request.

- Must be a patient, courteous listener, willing to spend time talking to them and showing interest in them.
- Must always be a professional, even when not teaching. Must set a good example to patrons and other instructors.
- Athletic shoes designed for aerobics should be worn. Make sure participants are appropriately dressed.
- No more than three (3) classes taught in one day. No more than two (2) taught back-to-back.
- No more than twelve (12) classes taught per week.
- Give at least five hours’ notice if not able to teach an assigned class.
- Any request of a special day off must be put in writing and given the Program/Marketing Director no later than Monday before the schedule is posted.
EDUCATION
A High School Diploma or G.E.D is required.
EXPERIENCE
A background in dance or exercise required. Knowledge of exercise physiology, anatomy, and proper exercise technique. Previous experience leading group exercise classes preferred.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION
A CPR/ AED certification.
Nationally recognized Aerobics certification required such as (ACE, NASM, AFAA, Turbo Splash, etc).
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to respond to the most sensitive inquires. Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS, EQUIPMENT/ JOB LOCATION, AND REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS
The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is required to sit, stand, stoop, walk, climb and lift. The employee must have good coordination, rhythm, and timing skills. Must possess physical strength, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility.
The employee will work indoors and at a variety of recreational facilities. Some evening, holiday and weekend work may be required. The employee operates telephones, copy machines, calculators and other modern office equipment. The employee is exposed to loud noises.
