This position is an ENTRY LEVEL POLICE OFFICER TRAINEE.

Qualified candidates who are selected for hire must be available to attend the State Police Academy Training with no absences. Academy dates are not yet scheduled and are subject to change, with prior notice. 

 

Qualified candidates must have clear background, clear motor vehicle, and pass a psychological evaluation, pre-employment physical (hearing, vision, overall fitness and lifting) and drug screen examination.

 

A basic physical ability test is scheduled for Friday, October 25th at 12 PM CST, at the O Course at TN Law Enforcement Training Academy. This test involves a timed fitness course that includes running, jumping, negotiating obstacles, dragging a 175 lb. mannequin, crawling, and climbing. A written test is also required and will be administered on that same day for those that successfully pass the agility test.

Candidates who have already completed Basic Police School at a Tennessee State Academy within the last 24 months, on their own and have not yet been hired by a Police Department will be considered for this Trainee position and will not be required to attend the academy again.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Investigates crimes and accidents, protects property, facilities, and citizens.
  • Patrols commercial, business, industrial, and residential districts within the City enforcing City Ordinances and State laws.
  • Investigates traffic accidents and makes reports of same.
  • Investigates crimes, reports findings, and makes arrests of suspects.
  • Directs and controls traffic.
  • Testifies in court or legal proceedings.
  • Operates and maintains law enforcement equipment.
  • Investigates, reports and follows-up on various violations of the laws of Tennessee and of the Ordinances of the City of Lebanon.
  • Writes routine reports, correspondences using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Speaks to community groups on methods of crime prevention.
  • Assists other departmental staff as directed by supervisor.
  • 12-hour shifts and hours vary including days and nights.

REQUIREMENTS

 

  • H.S. Diploma or GED is required.
  • Some College Coursework is preferred.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor involving “moral turpitude” as the term is defined by law and not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable conditions from any of the armed forces of the United States.
  • Must have good moral character.
  • Successful completion of a physical examination by a licensed physician.
  • Be free from all apparent mental disorders as described in the Diagnosis and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association and be certified as meeting these criteria by a qualified professional in the psychiatric and psychological fields.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must meet TCA 38-8-106 (Qualifications for Police Officers) requirements.
  • Basic proficiency with Windows and MS Office is required. Prior experience utilizing basic Microsoft Word and Outlook is strongly desired.

 

CERTIFICATION

 

  • This is an introductory level police officer. Individuals hired into this position will be required to meet all requirements to qualify for and successfully complete Police Academy.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.
  • The employee frequently is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, run, or crawl.
  • The employee is also required to stand, walk, and taste or smell.
  • Must have finger strength and manipulation to operate firearms.
  • Hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or make fine distinctions in sound.
  • You must have normal ability to understand speech in noisy areas, understand whispered speech, and be able to localize sounds.
  • All candidates shall be tested for sharpness of hearing, to establish a record of hearing ability at the time of recruitment and to provide a valid basis for disqualification of such candidates as are found to have obvious hearing defects which would interfere with ordinary police duty, such as inability to clearly perceive sounds within the normal voice range, or such sounds as are transmitted by police sirens, police radios, or voice commands, within normal decibel limits.
  • Must have the ability to apprehend and physically control suspects.
  • Must have the physical ability to pursue suspects by navigating many obstacles and have the ability to maintain high levels of exertion in times of emergencies.
  • Must be able to wear 15-25 pounds of equipment for an entire shift (12 hours +) and perform required job duties with such equipment on person; must be able to hold in position firearms, and at the same time, safely manage the recoil produced by the firearm; must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and move or drag heavy objects (over 100 pounds), such as equipment and road debris, and lift, carry and drag to assist in emergency treatment of victims and suspects; must be able to extract victims from automobiles and buildings; must have sufficient overall strength to defend self or others from physical attack, and sufficient strength to restrain violators; must be able to transfer equipment from station to vehicle, to carry equipment or other objects as needed, such as evidence or found property. 
  • Visual acuity is required for night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicle.
  • Ability to operate firearms.
  • Conditions present high stress and threat to personal safety during periods of search and seizure and arrest; may be exposed to toxic materials, blood borne pathogens and other infectious environments; have to deal with unruly or dangerous individuals, unsafe building sites and deadly force; may be required to extend work schedule during emergency situations. Conditions are generally unsafe.
  • Workweek generally consists of 12-Hour night or day shifts totaling 84hours in a two week pay period. May work various hours and shifts.
  • May be required to work overtime as needed and with limited advance notice.
  •  This is a safety and security sensitive position.
