Reports to: Project Director MEP & Construction
Rate of Pay: $38.52/hour
Shift: 7:00am-3:30pm, Monday-Friday 

Job Summary: Skilled Trade Mechanics are responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicles, mechanical systems, and structural components at the University of Kansas Health System Training Complex, Arrowhead Stadium, and outside areas of the Truman Sports Complex. This role requires a versatile individual who can handle a variety of tasks, including mechanical diagnostics and repairs, professional-level spray painting, welding, and executing preventative maintenance schedules from planning to completion.

ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance, including oil changes, brake repairs, and engine tune-ups.
  • Troubleshoot issues using diagnostic tools and technical manuals.
  • Replace or repair faulty components such as engines, transmissions, and suspensions.
  • Perform welding and fabrication to repair or reinforce metal components and structures.
  • Operate welding equipment, including MIG, TIG, and stick welders.
  • Spray paint at a professional level for equipment, signage, and maintenance applications.
  • Cut, shape, and join metal parts using various welding techniques.
  • Operate heavy equipment including forklifts, snow plows, and telehandlers (lull) for material handling and stadium maintenance.
  • Adapt to changing work demands, responding to urgent repairs, emergency calls, and event-related maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, and parts inventory.
  • Provide excellent customer service by explaining repair needs and costs.
  • Operate and maintain tools, equipment, and diagnostic devices.
  • Snow removal: Ability to work in freezing temperatures for extended periods of time, carry 50lb bags of ice melt over distances and up stairs, shovel snow from walkways, scatter ice melt, and be on-call as required.
  • Keep the Maintenance Shop and all work areas organized and free of debris.
  • Must be able to work independently while also taking direction from leadership.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Operates heavy lift equipment including forklifts, scissor lifts, and boom lifts up to 80 feet.
  • Knowledge and skill in hazardous materials handling, application, and disposal.
  • Proven experience as a mechanic and welder (automatic, diesel, or industrial experience is a plus).
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools and repair equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and welding blueprints.
  • Experience with MIG, TIG, and stick welding.
  • Knowledge of metal fabrication and professional-grade spray painting techniques.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy parts or equipment.
  • Must be able to work independently and deliver direction to part-time staff.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Professional Appearance: All applicants must maintain a professional appearance.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Must be adaptable to varying workloads and capable of handling high-pressure event weeks.

EXPECTATIONS:

  • Reports to work each day on time and works extra hours when needed, particularly during event weeks where long hours will be required.
  • Employee must comply with proper safety policies and procedures as required (i.e., when using cleaning chemicals, painting chemicals, reporting incidents, etc.).
  • Provides an excellent level of customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • The employee must be able to determine the neatness, accuracy, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • If required to travel for business, maintains a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Must undergo and pass a background check.
  • Position requires joining the SEIU Local #1 Union.
  • This role includes significant overtime opportunities based on seniority, and all tools are provided by the company at no out-of-pocket expense.
  • Expected to work in all weather conditions, including extreme cold, heat, and inclement weather.
  • Position is part of a larger snow removal support system and may be called in for emergency repairs as needed.
