Lead Machinist

Job Summary:
The Lead Machinist is responsible for providing technical support to manufacturing so that parts are provided per specifications and in a timely manner. This individual will also serve as a back-up to the Machine Shop Supervisor in their absence.
Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions of the Job
- Drive a culture of safety in line with company goals and through leading by example in all areas of safety.
- Partner with members of safety teams to manage risk and improve processes.
- Hold employees accountable while evolving best practices through continuous improvement.
- Drive efficiency and transactional discipline mindset throughout your organization.
- Assist in staff development through coaching, counseling, mentoring, motivating, and training using a continuous improvement approach while holding employees accountable and monitoring progress.
- Act as an advocate for employee engagement by supporting company initiatives, processes and procedures while employing a variety of communication strategies to ensure employees understand their expectations.
- Escalate to the respective supervisor, any employee relations matters including but not limited to performance, conduct and safety (positive or negative).
- Set up; program and operate CNC machine centers.
- Conducts and participates in specified training for department employees on tooling and machining practices, as well as other machines.
- Address questions of machine operators regarding tooling, procedures, fixture, and print clarification, contact design engineers and project leaders to resolve questions or conflicts on blueprints; make suggestions to improve efficiency in machining parts.
- Work with machine operators to come up with fixtures, new tooling, and procedures to enhance productivity while maintaining product quality.
- Determine ways to repair work pieces made in error.

Completes any engineering changes as necessary and in accordance with our standard operating procedures.

Acts as liaison in dealing with issues with vendors.

In the absence of a Machine Shop Supervisor, organize shop orders for work centers in shop order number sequence; use computer to print out dispatch reports for various work centers; place shop orders in date order per Dispatch Report, ( ; distribute work orders to shop employees to various machining centers; and uphold the current practices standard operating practices for any late ads or requested rush orders.

Provide communication to the Machine Shop Supervisor regarding items that occurred in their absence, ensuring all items are smoothly transitioned to the supervisor upon their return.

Recommends and implements changes in procedures.

Resolve issues of late or missing parts; change or clarify routings as necessary, for day and evening and weekend shifts.
Occasional Job Responsibilities:
- Operate forklift, scissors lift and cranes
- Add insight in the employee performance assessment process.
Job Requirements:
- Requires education generally equivalent to a High School diploma.
- Education generally equivalent to an associate's degree or journeymen certificate preferred but not required.
- 3-5 years of experience required.
- Requires intermediate mathematical skills.
- Requires good oral and written communication skills in order to interact with employees.
- Must be able to read and understand complex blueprints, specifications, and routings.
- Must have a strong attention to detail, accuracy, and safety.
- Must have Advanced computer skills.
- Must be able to work with standard and metric.
- Advanced programing skills, preferred.
- Knowledge of speeds and feeds required.
- Must be able to use measuring tools, such as micrometers.
- Requires knowledge of solid edge and autocad.
- Must be able to complete basic to complex set ups.
- Strong knowledge of multiple types of machines.
- Must be able to collaborate with others (including in person) to proactively develop solutions.
