Data Processing Tools for Energy Security Internship
ISO New England is the not-for-profit, independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England’s ongoing transition to clean energy.
Internship Title – Data Processing Tools for Energy Security
Department – System Operations and Market Administration
Minimum Education level: JR
Preferred Majors: Data Science, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics
Department Description:
The Operations Energy Security team provides regular energy security forecasts for New England, looking ahead to the next 21 days as well as the upcoming summer/winter. These energy forecasts consider a variety of factors that may cause electricity shortages, including fuel availability, emissions restrictions, known generator outages, and timing of intermittent renewables like wind and solar.
What will you be working on:
In this role, you will develop and test a tool that processes survey responses from generators regarding their winter readiness preparations, including creating graphics and summary statistics that convey the key takeaways from the survey. Intern will also develop and test a tool that transforms existing data structures into relational tables, which are inputs to the 21-day energy security forecast.
Intern will gain hands-on experience building data processing tools, performing data cleaning operations, and creating clear graphics to convey useful summaries of statistical data. You will gain familiarity with the New England electricity sector, especially how generators of different types handle cold weather and an understanding of the numerous factors that can contribute to electricity shortages.
How will you make an impact:
The products from this internship -- a winter readiness processing tool and a data table preparation tool -- will streamline and speed up tasks performed by the operations energy security analysis team.
What we look for in a candidate:
Python (intermediate or higher)
SQL (beginner or higher strongly preferred)
VBA (beginner or higher, preferred)
Git version control experience (preferred, not required)
