EMT Analyses Supporting NECEC HVDC Operation Study
ISO New Englandis the not-for-profit, independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England’s ongoing transition to clean energy.
Internship Title – EMT Analyses supporting NECEC HVDC operation study
Department – Advanced Technology Solutions
Minimum Education level: PhD
Preferred Majors: Power System Engineering
Department Description:
The Advanced Technology Solutions (ATS) department engages in both long-term research projects and near-term design/process improvements. The department consists of experts in three topic areas: power systems, simulations, and markets. In all projects, the goal of the department is to provide innovative and practical solutions to current and emerging questions for ISO New England.
What will you be working on:
The candidate will assisting ISO-NE's operations planning study for New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) HVDC project, particularly in electro-magnetic transient (EMT) analyses. He/she will primarily engage in inverter-based resource (IBR) model testing, packaging, and case set-up for PSS/E-PSCAD hybrid simulation. Necessary documentation and knowledge sharing will be needed.
How will you make an impact:
This position will expedite the ongoing NECEC HVDC operation planning study as well as other major IBR projects in the commissioning queue.
EMT model processing and maintenance work, as an integral part of implementing EMT analyses in assessing and securing the BPS transient stability, will also be greatly facilitated.
What we look for in a candidate:
Major in Electrical Engineering is required and a concentration in electric power systems is desirable;
Familiar with the technical concept of and simulation tools (PSS/E, DSA Tools or other equivalents) for power system load flow analysis and transient stability simulation;
Experience in using EMT tools (PSCAD, RTDS or others ) for IBR modeling and simulation is preferred, but not required.
