Energy Market R&D Scientist
ISO New England is the not-for-profit, independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England’s ongoing transition to clean energy.
We have an important role to play in securing the region’s clean and reliable energy future and seek folks from a variety of disciplines to join us! In this role you will apply knowledge and skills from a wide range of fields including mathematical optimization, economic theory and power system engineering to tackling major challenges in ISO's markets, operations and planning. You will analyze the problems, design innovative solutions, develop prototypes and oversee the implementation.
The Market Solutions & Optimization Technology group performs design, modeling and analysis work for ISO markets; applies advanced optimization technology to ISO problems; and conducts interdisciplinary research in power system economics, optimization and engineering. The group provides a unique opportunity to work on fundamental and innovative solutions to challenging industry problems. We work closely with engineers and economists across multiple ISO departments and collaborate with various external research entities.

How you will make an impact:
- Analyze and assess market designs or operations/planning processes
- Develop and prototype models/solutions for market design and optimization problems
- Research electricity market designs to facilitate the region's transition to clean energy
- Research new optimization technologies to improve scheduling and pricing of electricity markets
- Perform market/operations/planning simulations and analyze the results
- Assist other ISO departments in identifying, analyzing and solving problems
- Support stakeholder processes and FERC filing
What you need to be successful in this role:
- A Masters or Ph.D. degree in Electrical/Industrial/System Engineering, Operations Research or related areas
- Strong knowledge/experience in power system modeling, analysis and optimization
- Good understanding of electricity markets, power system operations and planning
- Experience with optimization solver such as CPLEX/GUROBI and programming languages such as Java/Python
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and analytical skills
- 5+ years of experience is required for the Senior/Lead level.
