Power System R&D Engineer
ISO New England is the not-for-profit, independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England’s ongoing transition to clean energy.
The Power System R&D Engineer position offers a unique opportunity to conduct a wide range of research and development work to solve practical challenging issues facing the ISO New England during the clean energy transition. We are looking for talented applicants with strong power system background who are able to analyze critical issues and problems, identify new opportunities, design and recommend technological solutions to help improve the resilience, reliability, and efficiency of New England's power grid.
This role will be an integral part of the Power System Technology team within the Advanced Technology Solutions department. This dynamic group consists of highly intellectual, high-performance R&D engineers, each recognized as an industry subject matter expert in their fields. Internally and externally, the group is known as the "Think Tank" and "Innovation Engine", dedicated to solving real-world problems through innovation.

How you will make an impact:
- Conduct research and development on emerging power system issues such as large scale renewable integration, advanced modeling and simulation of power electronics and controls (Wind, Solar, Battery, HVDC, FACTS), on-line transient stability and cascading failure assessment, transmission and distribution co-simulation, impact of climate change and extreme weather on power system reliability, etc.
- Analyze, design, prototype and recommend innovative solutions to complex technical challenges from business units such as Planning, Operations, and IT.
- Collaborate on state-of-the-art power system research with external research organizations such as EPRI, PSERC, CURENT, DOE National Labs, and software vendors.
What you need to be successful in this role:
- PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, focusing on electric power systems
- Extensive experience with power system modeling, simulation and analysis, especially related to Inverter Based Resources (IBRs)
- Familiarity with commercial power system analysis tools such as PSS/E, PSCAD, PowerWorld, DSATools, etc.
- Experience in using GE Energy Management System (EMS) highly desired
- Hands-on experience in software development using Java, Python, Matlab, etc.
- Good communication and analytical skills
- At least 5 years of experience is required for the Senior R&D Engineer, and 8 years of experience is required for the Lead R&D Engineer
