GENERAL SUMMARY
The Utility Worker A works under general, directive supervision and regularly and customarily performs any one or more types of semi-skilled work required in the maintenance and operations of hydro turbine generators.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for compliance with current Company safety rules and procedures, including operating practices, safety procedures, and all regulatory requirements. Conducts and adheres to pre-job briefings for each task.
- Assists in any mechanical or electrical maintenance repair on station equipment, structures, and buildings.
- Operates plant equipment needed to perform job duties, including vehicles, cranes, hoists, etc.
- Sets up rigging and scaffolding.
- Inspects, lubricates, tests, observes, and records data; undertakes corrective action or reports information as appropriate.
- Operates and maintains water treatment equipment.
- Performs routine clerical work, including station logs (such as maintenance repairs and outage logs), time reports, material requisitions, etc.
- Works as part of a crew as required.
- Maintains equipment and work areas in a neat, clean, and safe manner.
- Reads and interprets complex blueprints, wiring and schematic diagrams, as required to perform both internal and external switching and tagging (mechanical and electrical).
- Assists with determining appropriate energy control boundaries and performs isolation and tagging of equipment including electrical isolation. Restores equipment to normal operating condition.
- Performs monitor duties at the Upper Reservoir to include visual inspection of the dike, recording piezometer readings, observing weir flows, driving Company vehicles in all weather conditions and reporting any unusual conditions.
- When work within this job classification is temporarily interrupted or delayed, employee may be assigned to other work which the employee may reasonably be expected to perform with safety to self and others.
- Responsible for janitorial duties, general housekeeping, shipping/receiving, and stocking of parts inventory.
- Performs plant PM’s, sump and oil samples and bearing oil level changes.
- Operates and services oil purifying equipment.
Under Direct Supervision:
- Performs pipe fitting, pipe covering, insulation, non-code welding, brazing, flame, arc and oxyacetylene cutting and layout and fabrication of parts from various materials. Maintains piping systems.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The Utility Worker A reports to the Supervisor. The Utility Worker A may also be given direction from maintenance and operations personnel.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical requirements include: working on feet for 12 hour periods, stair and ladder climbing, working at heights and in confined spaces and routinely lifting 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.
Must be able to report to the work site as scheduled and respond to overtime in a reasonable period of time. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. May be required to be "on call" and report work in a timely manner.
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Must possess working knowledge of various shop tools and equipment.
- Must be willing to receive instructions, communicate effectively, and co-operate with fellow employees at all times in the performance of work.
- Must possess effective oral and written communication skills to organize and present ideas, reports, and analyses effectively.
- Two-year (Associate) technical degree in a relevant field or equivalent preferred or six (6) years industry applicable experience (power plant preferable) or six (6) years as a journeyman in a certified program (electrician, millwright, pipe fitter, boilermaker) or completion of appropriate level of studies in a military technical school (e.g. nuclear propulsion).
- Must be willing to acquire additional knowledge and skills required for performance of the duties of this position through attendance at Company provided training classes and other means.
Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school required. Must successfully complete the Utility Worker A qualification card.
