Job Description

 

IHI Power Services Corp. (IPSC) has a career opportunity for a power plant millwright level Seasonal O&M Tech II – Maintenance Technician - $36 to $45/hr (negotiable based on experience) at our Rio Bravo Fresno Power Plant located just south of the City of Fresno. The facility is a 24.3 NMW biomass fired power plant.

 

Job Summary

Conducts day to day operations and maintenance of the plant to include plant operations, mechanical maintenance. Monitors plant performance and is capable, without supervision, of identifying mechanical issues or failures and performing corrective action when appropriate. Is fully proficient in at least one of the disciplines listed above and as such has the ability to perform complex mechanical duties. Can take the lead while performing acceptance and performance tests on existing or new plant equipment. Provides guidance to less experienced mechanical personnel.

 

Job Functions

  • Start-up, operate, shutdown and secure equipment under normal and emergency conditions, from the control room or in the field.
  • Troubleshoot and perform artisan level mechanical skills such as pipefitting, boiler repair, pump, motor and coupling alignment.
  • Inspect all facility machinery thoroughly for malfunctions and / or potential failures.
  • Maintain all logs and records as required to record complete operating conditions for the facility and report any irregularities.
  • Identify hazardous and/or unsafe conditions or work practices, notify supervisor, and take action to correct as required.
  • Controls, monitors, and evaluates plant production equipment and output including efficiency and related variables (e.g., heat rate, cost/unit of production, system demands and capabilities given various circumstances) and the overall effectiveness of operation practices and procedures.
  • Performs routine and (ash, boiler and fuel system maintenance, valve packing replacement, valve replacement, pump repairs, pump overhauls) complex (i.e. equipment alignment, welding and/or metal fabrication) maintenance work, as assigned.
  • Perform repairs to damaged or malfunctioning equipment as identified and required to optimize plant operating capabilities and performance.
  • Perform preventive maintenance activities and tasks as required.
  • Perform preparatory work such as rough filing, chipping, grinding, sanding, sawing and scraping. Clean gasket surfaces and make and install simple gaskets.
  • Ability to operate portable electric or air tools, such as drills, hammers, grinders, and lifting/rigging equipment.
  • Operate heating units such as blowtorches, furnaces, oxyacetylene torches and perform rough cutting and burning.
  • Remove and make simple repairs to thermal insulation.
  • Develops maintenance and preventive maintenance procedures to ensure consistent and safe operation.
  • Conduct or assist in scheduled and forced outage maintenance work.
  • Supervise, coordinate, or assist contractors performing work at the facility.
  • Comply with all Facility Environmental, Health and Safety policies and programs.
  • Maintain logs and/or records of problems, repairs, and downtime as required utilizing site specific CMMS program. (Mainsaver)
  • Participate in committees and task forces as required, for plant operations and improvements.
  • Assist in both forced and scheduled outage planning.
  • Maintain shop and location where work is performed in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Assist in the implementation and upkeep of the overall preventative maintenance and spare parts inventory tracking system.
  • Assist in both forced and scheduled outage planning strategies.
  • Complete other duties as requested by supervision.
  • Cross training in our Fuel and operation department.



Education and Experience – An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.

  • High School diploma or equivalent level of work experience.
  • Successful completion of applicable Pre-Employment test battery.
  • Successful completion of applicable Pre-Employment drug testing and formal background checks.
  • Must be able to perform the physical demands of the assigned position.
  • Must possess a solid level of computer literacy (Microsoft Office).
  • At least three years of related work experience.
  • Possess a valid state-issued driver’s license.
  • Welding, cutting, brazing experience.
  • Basic metal fabrication experience.
  • Millwright level competencies.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.

  • Must possess basic math skills, good verbal communications skills, and be proficient with the use of power and precision tools.
  • Must be cooperative with those he/she contacts in this work and have the ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Must know the hazards involved and the safety precautions to be practiced in the operation and maintenance of power plant equipment and machinery.
  • Must possess basic heavy equipment preventive maintenance and malfunction troubleshooting knowledge.
  • Work within and ensure strict adherence to all safety practices and procedures.
  • Must be able to respond to audio alarms and variation of sound.
  • Basic data entry/computer skills.
  • Work as a team. Must be able to pool our knowledge and energy to work in tandem to completely understand and productively respond to all the business challenges.

 

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  • Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection and other equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties. Work with hazardous materials may be required.
  • May be required to work 12-hour shifts with weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. On call status (day or night) is required.
  • Includes working indoors and outdoors.

  • Must be able to work on feet for extensive periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting 50 pounds.
