Job Description
IHI Power Services Corp. (IPSC) has a career opportunity for an O & M Technician, levels I - III depending on experience. The plant is in the Bayswater neighborhood of Far Rockaway Queens NY, 11691.
The position is an Onsite role with no ability to work remote. Some travel to training sites within NYC may be assigned but travel out of the region is not expected.
The pay range is between $39.90 - $56.16, depending on qualifications and training; There is a potential to earn $64.94 once all licenses are obtained and the person can operate the plant independently.
Job Summary
O&M Technicians primarily operate and maintain an electric generating plant, which consists of 2 Pratt and Whitney FT-8 swift-pac generating units rated at approx. 55MW each, 2 13.8/69 KV transformers, auxiliary electrical switchgear, 2 natural gas compressors, 2 air compressors, bulk liquid fuel oil storage, water processing equipment, and fire protection systems.
The O&M techs perform operator rounds and electrical/mechanical repairs & maintenance. The O&M technicians can expect to operate fork trucks and other mobile equipment to move material around the plant. O&M Techs need to able to perform administrative tasks that pertain to logging events and controlling LOTO records.
Job Functions
Industry-specific skills
- Knowledge of and experience with the operation of generators.
- Knowledge of and experience with the operation of Gas Turbine engines (aero-derivative or industrial)
- Knowledge of the functions of protective relays associated with power plants.
Administrative/Computer skills
- Must be able to use electronic databases (logging on and entering data for payroll, performing LOTO/Work Permits, maintaining operator logs and other data entry functions)
Documented training
- OSHA 10
- Safe use Fork truck/man-lift/JLG/scissor lift
- NFPA 70E
- Scaffold safety
- HAZWOPER 24
- Incident command system knowledge
- First Aid/CPR/AED
Instrumentation and Control Skills
- Knowledge of industrial control systems
- Ability to calibrate instruments.
Education and Experience – An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
- 3+ years of experience with trade school, relevant military training, or other technical training to be considered in lieu of experience.
- Must be able to read and write in English
- Must be able to communicate in English on phone calls and in face-to-face conversation
Required licensees:
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- This position is located in the borders of New York City and the person must be able to obtain the following FDNY Certificates of fitness within 180 days (6 months) of employment.
- A-35, C-91, C-92, C-91, F-01, G-29, G-46, P-13, S-12, S-15 and S-95
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - which may be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those commonly associated with this position.
Mechanical skills
- Lubrication of pumps/motors/valves
- Changing belts and couplings
- Packing valves
- Replacing filters
- Compression tube fitting
- Threading pipe
- Ability to read one-line mechanical.
Electrical Skills
- Know how to use a multimeter (testing fuses, checking continuity, measuring voltage and current, etc.)
- Breaker racking experience.
- Ability to read one-line electrical prints.
Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
Schedule
- After working 6:00am - 2:30pm for site familiarization training (+/- 2 months) the position will transition to a rotating shift schedule
- 12-hour shifts. Working weekends, nights, and holidays are part of the normal rotation.
- Typical shifts are 6a-6p or 6p-6a. This is a lone-worker position on nights, holidays, and weekends.
- Please note that upon hiring the O&M technician becomes a probationary member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 30. After 180 days (6 months) of employment, the probation ends.

- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in high noise and/or hot, cold temperature extremes.
- Ability to work in proximity to high voltage and/or rapidly rotating equipment and in cramped and/or confined conditions requiring overall flexibility, manual dexterity, and hand-eye coordination, with occasional heavy lifting.
- Ability to wear a respirator, hard hat, hearing, and eye protection.
- Able to lift 75 pounds.
- Ability to safely operate a forklift and man-lift
- All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment drug screening as it applies under the Fitness for Duty Program.
- There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the plant.
