The general salary range for the position is $93,000 - 112,000. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Senior Strategist, Research and Regulatory Science for its Affiliate, Humane Society International (HSI). This position will accelerate Korean government acceptance and corporate use of scientifically valid alternatives, non-animal test methods and strategies for vaccines and biologicals, biomedical sciences, chemicals and other regulated products through active engagement with authorities, corporate academic, and other stakeholders.
This position will be responsible for:
• Promoting the full and timely acceptance and use of available animal testing alternatives in legislation, regulations, data requirements, test guidelines and other instruments by preparing public comments, briefings, scientific white papers and other publications on behalf of HSI/Korea, as needed;
• Promoting the use of non-animal test methods and scientifically valid alternatives via direct communications and negotiations with Korean science, industry and other stakeholders, in close coordination with HSI research and toxicology program leads;
• Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant developments in relation to animal testing alternatives in Korea via the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, regional pharmacopeias and other international bodies and communicates relevant information to HSI’s global research and toxicology team;
• Representing HSI/Korea in scientific events, policy meetings, and to the media with a broad range of stakeholders, including research institutes, governmental agencies, companies, universities and other parties relevant to achieving research and toxicology department objectives;
• Assisting with the organization, promotion and administration of periodic scientific workshops and other research and toxicology events;
• Supporting research and toxicology non-technical personnel, as needed;
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• A PhD or other professional degree in biology, toxicology or related field or equivalent work experience required;
• A minimum of five (5) years of experience in a relevant scientific field required;
• Experience with regulatory frameworks for vaccines and biologicals, biomedical sciences, chemicals and other regulator products,
• Proficient in spoken and written Korean and English;
• Strong written, oral and electronic communication skills, including the ability to quickly absorb, analyze and communicate complex subject matter to a variety of audiences;
• Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and exercise sound judgment and problem-solving;
• Proven ability to build/foster relationships with diverse stakeholder groups, demonstrating high standards of tact, diplomacy and discretion;
• Commitment to the replacement of animal use in toxicology and biomedical research and the ability to professionally advocate HSI policy positions;
• A high level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and a professional presence for effectively interacting with and influencing others, internal and external to the organization, as well as for facilitating meetings and conducting public speaking/presentations;
• Ability to take initiative and work effectively as part of a team or independently;
• Ability to multitask and work under pressure;
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel);
• Ability and willingness to travel within Korea and elsewhere as needed.
