Henderson Engineers is seeking a Sustainability Consulting Manager to join our team. The Sustainability Consulting Manager leads efforts to support decarbonization in the built environment and in energy systems. They focus on planning, developing, and managing initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions from buildings and transforming energy systems to achieve net zero. This position requires both strategic vision and hands-on project management, including managing budgets, mentoring staff, and guiding clients through complex energy and decarbonization challenges. The Sustainability Consulting Manager plays a pivotal role in helping clients transition from fossil fuel dependency to sustainable, resilient, and efficient energy solutions, while maintaining thought leadership and advancing policy through robust research and modeling.

 

Minimum Qualifications for the Role are:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction management, building science, or a closely related field required. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in complex mechanical engineering designs and sustainability consulting required, with a focus on energy systems, building decarbonization, and climate modeling.
  • Proven experience in project management required, including leading complex, multi-faceted sustainability projects and managing budgets.
  • Experience in working with building design, construction processes, and building operations required.
  • Experience with decarbonization modeling frameworks and applying quantitative analysis to energy efficiency and policy scenarios required.
  • Strong understanding of energy modeling tools and software programs.
  • Knowledge of state and city building performance standards for existing buildings and energy codes such as Title 24, ASHRAE 55, 62.1, 90.1, and 189.1.
  • Expertise in building decarbonization strategies, renewable energy, and energy infrastructure.
  • Strong experience with climate scenario analysis, energy conservation measures, and developing science-based targets.
  • Proven ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, for data analysis and presentation.
  • Familiarity with global energy markets and climate change issues.
  • Experience with climate pathways modeling, including adoption trajectories, electric generation modeling, and benefit-cost analysis.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, including top-notch presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in a team environment.
  • Proven ability to deliver complex projects on-time and on-budget, while maintaining a high level of client satisfaction.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in all core competencies as described and characterized in this job description.

 

Preferred Qualifications for the Role are:

  • Relevant certifications highly preferred such as Certified Decarbonization Professional (CDP), Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP), LEED Accredited Professional, Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP), Commissioning Authority (CxA).

Skills and Duties you will be Responsible for while in this role:

Strategy Development & Leadership

  • Support the development of the annual growth strategy for sustainability programs in collaboration with the consulting services and corporate sustainability directors.
  • Leverage opportunities and relationships internally across Henderson Companies and externally across the industry to develop business growth.
  • Lead the development, establishment, and maintenance of relationships with strategic partners and customers in support of and to expand business opportunities.
  • Lead and provide input on client engagement strategies, project pursuits and project execution. Participate in client, company and/or industry events to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Work in close collaboration with HEI sectors and HBS teams to develop, define and execute company-wide strategies.
  • Lead initiatives targeting decarbonization at the building level and in energy systems, identifying innovative solutions to reduce emissions and enable the transition to net zero.
  • Provide mentorship to junior staff on climate modeling, scenario analysis, and target setting, ensuring the team has the skills to execute projects successfully.

Project Management & Execution

  • Lead complex sustainability and decarbonization projects, including planning, budgeting, and implementation.
  • Spearhead new initiatives to support energy efficiency, clean energy, and electrification, accelerating the pace of emissions reductions in the built environment.
  • Work closely with building owners, architects, and engineers to understand their sustainability goals and provide tailored solutions for energy conservation and decarbonization.
  • Manage project budgets, ensuring that all financial goals are met while maintaining high levels of client satisfaction.

Energy & Decarbonization Modeling

  • Create, manage, and refine pathway models to help clients achieve their energy and emission goals, incorporating the latest data on emissions, health impacts, and cost projections.
  • Conduct model runs and quantitative analyses to assess the impact of potential policies on technology adoption, energy demand, emissions, and economic factors across client portfolios.
  • Update modeling frameworks to reflect state, local, and federal climate policies and ensure that the latest methodologies are employed for accurate analysis.

Client Engagement & Reporting

  • Prepare detailed reports on energy modeling and decarbonization strategies and present findings to clients, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders.
  • Guide clients through a well-defined energy consulting process, providing actionable advice based on rigorous analysis and expert knowledge.
  • Support the delivery of client roadmaps, impact studies, and other major projects aimed at achieving energy and climate goals.
  • Serve as an internal and external expert on decarbonization, providing insights to influence policy development and the design of clean energy programs.

Thought Leadership & Research

  • Write blogs, give presentations, and speak at industry conferences, sharing expertise on decarbonization and sustainability.
  • Stay ahead of evolving sustainability concepts, frameworks, and technologies by conducting ongoing research, helping the organization and clients implement innovative practices.

Team Collaboration & Leadership

  • Manage both internal and external project teams, coordinating efforts to deliver high-quality analysis and recommendations.
  • Serve as a mentor to staff, fostering a collaborative environment that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing among colleagues, external experts, and industry stakeholders to support sustainability goals and team success.

Business & Metrics Tracking

  • Participate in annual internal business planning and strategy sessions to set growth goals.
  • Track internal business and financial metrics, reporting on key accomplishments and ensuring projects contribute to overall business growth.
