Summary
The Field Mechanic (Heavy Equipment) is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing Heavy Civil Construction Equipment.
Essential Job Functions
- Diagnoses problems and performs mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy civil construction equipment (including, but not limited to, bulldozers, scrapers, backhoes, front end loaders, yard trucks, forklifts, and company vehicles).
- Inspects and documents condition of equipment for items needing repair or service.
- Replaces or repairs defective parts using hand tools, power tools, cutting torches, and welding equipment.
- Rebuilds or fabricates parts.
- Lubricates moving parts and operates repaired equipment to verify conformance to specifications.
- Performs tasks per preventative maintenance checklist.
- Drives pick-up or service truck.
- Safety conscious and responds to inquiries promptly; follows through to ensure the situation is taken care of correctly.
- Other related duties as required or assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in repair/maintenance/welding in heavy civil construction equipment required
- High School diploma or its equivalent
- Must be able to cut, weld and fabricate
- Experience and knowledge of CAT ET diagnostic tool.
- Must have the ability to climb ladders and operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner
- Working knowledge and understanding of OSHA rules and regulations
- Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are required
- Previous experience reading technical manuals and understanding of schematic diagrams preferred
Additional Requirements
- This position is exposed to high temperatures; cool/cold temperatures; loud noises and fumes.
- Work in the construction area poses significantly greater risk due to moving construction equipment and active construction zones with trip and fall hazards.
- Requires valid state-specific driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle record that meets Haydon’s insurability requirements.
