The Medical Lab Assistant is responsible for performance of phlebotomy, laboratory clerical work, and selected laboratory procedures. Responsibilities include order entry, patient preparation, specimen collection, and blood drawing using standardized phlebotomy procedures. Additionally, the incumbent processes specimens and performs basic waived lab testing. The Medical Lab Assistant works under the general guidance, direction and supervision of the Medical Laboratory Manager and/or the Chief Medical Technologist. Daily operational guidance and direction may be received from the Lead Medical Technologist.
Job Specific Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent is required.
- Certified or eligible for certification as a medical assistant or phlebotomist is preferred.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience with phlebotomy procedures is preferred.
- Possession of or eligibility for a valid Healthcare Provider CPR/AED certificate is required. Employee must obtain certification within four (4) months of employment.
- Knowledge of current laboratory safety and hygiene protocols is required.
- Knowledge and ability to accurately perform laboratory tests is required.
- Knowledge of and/or ability to learn and use computer-based applications such as MS Office, electronic medical record systems and laboratory related applications is required. Experience with EPIC is desirable but not required. Ability to operate a PC and other computer peripheral equipment is required.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and assume responsibility for job tasks is required.
- Ability to work at other GHC-SCW health center sites assuring adequate coverage is required. Ability to provide own transportation to various work locations is required.
- Ability to work effectively with the public and GHC-SCW staff is required.
- Excellent customer service skills and strong interpersonal skills are required. Ability to be culturally sensitive and work with a diverse patient population is required.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality is required. Knowledge of or ability to learn HIPAA requirements.
- Compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Standard (CLIA) for September 1, 1997 is required.
- Ability to stand, bend or stoop for the majority of a workday is required.
- Correctable vision, color perception, and legible handwriting are required.
