GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Senior Accounting Analyst is an expert level position that supports the Accounting department by providing value added service to members, credit union staff, external auditors, regulators and vendors in a professional, efficient, courteous, and respectful manner. Research accounting guidance to ensure accurate and ethical accounting treatment of Credit Union activities in all financial statements and reporting. Using discretion and independent judgement, proactively engage stakeholders to identify solutions designed to assist them in achieving the strategic initiatives of the Credit Union.
TASKS, DUTIES, FUNCTIONS:
Perform the following job duties and responsibilities in accordance with corporate policy and procedures, within established timeframes:
- Develop process improvements to accounting systems and procedures to mitigate/resolve systemic issues and outages.
- Increase productivity by developing automated applications, eliminating duplications and coordinating information requirements.
- Lead and coordinate department projects and initiatives by collaborating with senior leadership and various business unit stakeholders.
- Use knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles to provide subject matter expertise when facilitating projects across various business units.
- Report the status of projects, department goals and initiatives, and department performance to Accounting, the VP/Controller and senior leadership across relevant business units.
- Assist VP Controller to update and implement management policies and procedure practices for all position functions.
- Update procedures in response to changes in operational activities or technological upgrades.
- Record keeping of authorized signers and management of user access for corporate accounts necessary to perform business transactions (i.e. FRB, Wells Fargo, FHLB, etc.).
- Participate in the testing and validation of Credit Union software, teller interfaces, ERP systems, program, and database upgrades.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of state and federal laws and regulations related to credit union compliance including bank secrecy act (BSA) and anti-money laundering laws appropriate to the position.
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards, rules, regulations and systems of internal control and provide recommendations when needed.
- Organization, preparation, and collection of information to support and lead internal and external audits and regulatory examinations. This includes leading the annual independent audit and working directly with our external auditors to facilitate questions across the Accounting department and provide responses.
- Assist in the development of the audited financial statements including footnote calculations and narratives. Research and develop new footnotes from accounting literature, as applicable.
- Research and provide written reporting outlining the impacts of new accounting pronouncements on the financial statements and footnotes, as applicable.
- Develop reports for executive management and the board of directors.
- Assists management in facilitating department meetings.
- Lead Annual Insurance Renewal; liaise with business owners across the credit union.
- Manage the of Accounting Project and Process Analyst to maintain, document, review, and audit Chart of Accounts in ERP system (Prologue).
- Manage the Accounting Project and Process Analyst to ensure accurate maintenance and review of insurance coverage on all Credit Union property throughout the policy period.
- Manage the Accounting Project and Process Analyst to ensure accurate reporting and communication of incidents related to credit union members and property claims to the Credit Union's corporate insurance carrier.
- Manage the Accounting Project and Process Analyst to maintain, document, review, and audit GL access of teller interface system (DataSafe).
- Manage the Accounting Project and Process Analyst for accurate facilitation and oversight of the escheatment process for negotiable instruments and share accounts issued and maintained by the Credit Union.
- Perform reviews or validations of Accounting Project and Process Analyst work prior to, or in lieu of, review by Accounting Manager, Budget Manager or VP/Controller.
- Delegation of job duties and responsibilities to Accounting Project and Process Analyst as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXERTION UTILIZED IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THESE TASKS:
- Effective oral and written communication skills required to manage and evaluate staff, make presentations, prepare recommendations, perform analysis, and accomplish other managerial functions as listed.
- Must possess sufficient manual dexterity to skillfully operate a personal computer and other standard office equipment, such as a 10-key calculator, copy machine, and telephone.
- Must work independently with minimal direction and exhibit own initiative.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree Business, Accounting, Project Management, or related field including Accounting courses, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience required. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification preferred.
- EXPERIENCE: Five years’ experience in Accounting, financial institution, or equivalent. Public accounting experience preferred.
- KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Excellent oral, presentation, and writing communication skills required to interact with members, credit union staff and management, and vendors.
- Strong research, analytical, planning, and organizational skills.
- Ability to use logical reasoning when interpreting facts.
- Independent worker with ability to be flexible and work in a team environment.
- Quick learner, responsive, ability to multi-task, and time management skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines; may be required to work extended hours to complete tasks.
- Must possess sufficient manual dexterity to skillfully operate a personal computer and standard office equipment including 10-key calculator, telephone, and copier.
- Excellent personal computer skills, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Strong knowledge of existing credit union products, services and overall operational guidelines, including commonly used financial industry concepts and practices
- Knowledge of GAAP, financial analysis, budgeting, and credit union accounting policies and practices.
- Strong knowledge of accounting operations and systems within a financial institution.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Prolonged sitting throughout the workday with occasional mobility required.
- Prolonged operation of a personal computer, which includes operating a mouse and reading information on the monitor.
- Corrected vision within the normal range.
- Hearing within normal range. A device to enhance hearing will be provided if needed.
- Ability to lift 15 lbs. as may be required.
- Occasional movements throughout the department daily to interact with staff, accomplish tasks, etc.
- Moderate travel (3-4 times annually) locally, statewide, and throughout the United States may be required to attend seminars or research projects with vendors or peers. Overnight travel and evening schedules included.
- May occasionally require long work hours to accomplish tasks.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification preferred.
