Construction and Maintenance Supervisor

Summary: 
This position will coordinate and supervise in-house construction activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Coordinate with construction and maintenance director/manager on in-house construction projects
• Supervise the activities for assigned in-house construction and renovation projects 
• Perform walkthroughs/inspections to check work progress, ensure work is completed according to work orders, provide guidance as needed, and ensure availability and use of proper materials and tools 
• Determine project requirements and the required materials based on given project specifications; secure best source, price, and quality; purchase materials and supplies according to established guidelines; maintain accurate records of purchases and inventory
• Identify and resolve problems and coordinate construction activities through collaboration and communication with construction and maintenance director/manager 
• Assist with the implementation and review of weekly/monthly department forms and logs, construction projects, work orders, inventory etc.)
• Provide quarterly status reports on construction work
• Provide quarterly training reports
• Assist with work order system for scheduling construction and maintenance activities, prioritizing projects, coordinating work assignments, tracking requests, cost and ensure timeliness and quality of completed work
• Ensure all safety standards and guidelines are followed 
• Perform a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties of moderate difficulty in construction of Zoo buildings, facilities, and equipment 
• Build, maintain and repair various types of structures such as but not limited to buildings, fences, exhibits, etc.  
• Assist where needed in inter-departmental projects and functions
• Perform other related duties and responsibilities (as appropriate to skill level and experience) as assigned 
• Have regular and punctual attendance 
• Work modified schedule as needed and determined by management

Supervisory Responsibilities:
• Oversee daily activities of construction staff
• Demonstrate leadership of employees through ongoing training to include applicable laws, Zoo policies, business conduct and ethics and the provision of quality services to guests and employees supporting the highest level of program integrity

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 
• Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and materials used in construction and related trades
• Knowledge of construction equipment and safety practices
• Ability to operate various maintenance/construction equipment and tools
• Ability to communicate both in verbal and written forms with all levels of management, staff, vendors, etc. 
• Ability to remain flexible and efficient in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to make intelligent and quick decisions, work well under pressure, and when faced with unexpected occurrences or delays
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment to meet schedule and timelines

Education and/or Experience:
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred 
• Minimum of three years of directly related experience in construction 

Physical Demands: 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; Walk on uneven terrain including paved areas, gravel/rocks, and dirt/sand is required to access various locations in the Zoo. Work frequently involves periods of intense physical effort including, but not limited to, lifting and operating tools and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, walking significant distances, and using manual and power tools and equipment. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
