Job Overview:

The CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) Operator will be responsible for performing precise measurements and inspections on various parts, components, and assemblies used in the automotive manufacturing process. This includes parts produced through injection molding and assembly operations. The operator will utilize CMM equipment to ensure the products meet stringent quality standards and customer specifications.

 

  

Major Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

  • Set up, operate, and program CMM equipment (both manual and automated), including the use of CAD data for programming and performing accurate measurements on parts, including those produced through injection molding, assembly processes, and prototypes.
  • Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD models to ensure accurate part validation.
  • Perform first-off, last-off, and in-process checks on parts using CMM, and maintain detailed inspection reports.
  • Support production and prototype activities, ensuring proper application of APQP/PPAP processes, and perform capability studies (GR&R) and gauge verifications.
  • Revise and update CMM programs to reflect engineering changes and new product designs.
  • Create and maintain accurate, computer-based dimensional reports, documenting measurement results, discrepancies, and corrective actions.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration on CMM equipment to ensure optimal performance and minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with the engineering, quality control, and production teams to resolve measurement-related issues and implement corrective actions when needed.
  • Provide layout, tooling, and fixture support to meet dimensional requirements, including performing special layouts and studies to address customer and plant issues.
  • Support gauge control and direct computer controls for the maintenance of measurement instruments, and participate in departmental meetings and continuous improvement (CI) or corrective action (8D) meetings.
  • Attend meetings with customers, tool shops, and gauge shops to discuss dimensional verifications and support quality improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with company quality standards, industry regulations, and customer specifications.
  • Document and track calibration, maintenance, and inspection data for CMM machines.
  • Perform additional tasks as required, including special projects and supporting plant-specific needs.

 

Required Skills/Education/Experience:

The ideal candidate will have/possess the following qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or associate degree in a related preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating CMM machines in a manufacturing or quality control environment, preferably within automotive or injection molding industries.
  • Strong understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Proficient in interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and blueprints.
  • Experience with CMM programming is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with the injection molding and assembly processes in an automotive manufacturing setting is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail, with excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of quality standards and inspection techniques for automotive parts and components
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
