Medication Aide (WA)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Medication Aide helps create a joyful & vibrant community by caring for residents and administering and/or assisting with the self-administration of routine and non-routine and non-injectable medications by oral, rectal, or topical means in accordance with physician orders and nursing practices as directed by the Director of Nursing Services.

ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES

  • Performs various tasks assigned by the Director of Nursing Services including vital signs, residents' weights, applying creams/ointments, collecting specimens, as well as lifting, moving, and transporting residents, using proper body mechanics or lifting devices for accident prevention as directed by the Director of Nursing where State Nursing Regulations authorize such delegation.
  • Maintains accurate record of medications and treatments administered or omitted on each resident’s clinical record to include the reason medication was omitted or prn medication was given.
  • Records narcotics administered or received on the appropriate controlled drug count sheet, reporting all medication errors immediately.
  • Reports and records changes in resident conditions, incident and accidents to Director of Nursing Services, physician and family members as indicated by the Director of Nursing Services.
  • Communicates with physician, pharmacy, and family as indicated to ensure medications are received in a timely manner. Provides direct resident care while promoting resident dignity, independence, and choice; regularly observes resident’s physical and mental condition and directly reports to the Director of Nursing Services.
  • Communicates and interacts effectively and tactfully with the resident, visitors, families, peers, and supervisors.
  • Assists with or performs ADL’s as needed, accurately documents care services provided in observation on communication logs and incident reports.
  • Greets residents, visitors, and staff courteously and in a manner that respects dignity, confidentiality standards and promotes individual rights.
  • Follows and supports community fire safety and infection control practices and promptly reports any unsafe conditions or equipment to the Director of Nursing Services.
  • Follows standard precautions and safe work practices, established fire/safety/disaster plans, risk management, and security, report and/or correct unsafe working conditions, equipment repair and maintenance needs.
  • Restores medication and equipment and keeps the medication room clean and orderly.
  • Removes outdated or discontinued medication for return to the pharmacy.
  • Attends and participates in required meetings and trainings. Stays current on system assigned tasks and duties.
  • Performs other tasks/duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must hold current CNA/HCA license in good standing
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Must hold a medication pass certification per state requirements
  • Current First Aid and CPR Card
  • Maintains current Food Handlers card
  • Pass a criminal background and fingerprint check
  • General computer literacy and good knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word. Working knowledge of office machines (copier, fax, phone system, etc.).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hand to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds, lifting 25 to 40 pounds constantly. The employee must reach below shoulder height frequently and kneel, stoop and squat occasionally. Stand 6 out of 8 hours.
