Temporary Education Resource Associate help facilitate the success of Summer Camp.

Join the Carnegie Museum of Natural History summer camp team to get hands-on administrative experience by providing essential support to our engaging camp programs. As part of our team, you’ll work collaboratively with the education staff by providing crucial logistical support to our on-site, summer camp teams. This position requires prompt, friendly, and accurate communication across the camp team. The Education Resources Associate will provide leadership to the Camp Operations Team and gain behind-the-scenes experience that is crucial to a successful camp program. The Education Resources Associate is directly responsible for:

  • Organizing educational support material, including artifacts, fossils, models, etc.
  • Maintaining organization of reusable and consumable camp supplies.
  • Reviewing lesson plans to identify and procure materials for each planned activity.
  • Communicating with supervisors regarding purchasing of new materials and making purchases as needed within a budget.
  • Providing leadership to the Camp Operations Team.
  • Classroom and camper support. 

This temporary position will run from approximately May-August annually.

Candidates must be available to work during daylight hours between Monday – Friday beginning at the end of May through August.  Shift is 7:30AM - 3:30PM (37.5 hours per week, which includes a 30-minute lunch break.    

Team members should be available for a new staff orientation scheduled for Saturday, May 10th and May 17th and various times throughout the week of May 19th.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Candidates with a valid PA Driver’s license preferred
  • Access to a personal vehicle is not required, but the candidate must be comfortable driving a museum van. 
  • Responsible for supporting the operations and logistics of up to 5 camps simultaneously.  Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong communication skills are a must.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office suite and proficiency in Excel are required. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BA, BS or BFA.
  • Minimum two years’ experience working with children including some supervisory experience.
  • Museum familiarity preferred but not required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated success as a councilor/teacher in a classroom, afterschool, or camp environment for children, including some supervisory experience.
  • Strong verbal communication skills as well as ability to follow instructions independently.
  • Timeliness, and cooperative and congenial demeanor.
  • Must thrive in a team-oriented environment and work well with the public.
  • Understanding of classroom management, strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to perform well in a fast-paced setting.

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires constant mobility around the program space and through museum exhibit halls for several hours at a time. If the person is not able to bend or lift items of 20 – 50 lbs., they must be willing to ask for assistance performing tasks that require these actions. Candidates will be considered qualified if they can perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation. 

ENVIRONMENT AND SCHEDULING:

This position requires daily time spent outside for lunch and recess in the summer and movement around the museum spaces.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of education classes and space.
  • Maintain all resources in an organized way.
  • Clear communication with camp staff.
  • Ability to be flexible and problem solve.
  • Assure safety and security of campers at all times.
  • Oversee the administration of camp materials, organization of supplies and cleanliness of spaces.
  • Attend weekly meetings with supervisors and camp staff.  
  • Maintain supplies ensuring that all equipment, games, toys, and supplies are available, are used properly, and are in good working order.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The following PA Act 153 clearances, or proof of application of clearances, are required beginning employment and as a condition of continued employment: Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check FBI Fingerprint Criminal Background Check Obtaining the required clearances is completed as part of the new hire process.
