Research Technician
Glacier Support Services, LLC (GSS) is seeking a Research Technician to support Burn and Soft Tissue Research activity, for the purposes of providing advance medical care for injured service members. Will perform research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. Will provide laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff. Will solve problems of standard complexity in carrying out research projects in a clinical or laboratory environment.
Position Responsibilities:
- Provide supervision and specialized training for junior-level and newly assigned technical personnel.
- Work independently, often without the availability of immediate supervisory guidance.
- Apply experienced judgment in determining when supervisory assistance is required to resolve particularly unusual or controversial problems.
- Keep the supervisor advised of progress, but receives little review during progress of typical assignment.
- Perform experiments that require extended technical training and experience.
- Assigned to major projects or programs and/or function as technical experts.
- Provide sterile surgical and post-surgical care support.
- Induce anesthesia during protocols.
- Recognize pain/distress and take appropriate measures, as provided during training, to alleviate/mitigate the symptoms. Mitigation efforts include increased monitoring and providing analgesics.
- Collect data from research subjects using advanced imaging systems/ physiologic monitoring systems.
- Conduct daily calibration of monitoring equipment during active protocols.
- Clean and sterilize all instruments/equipment in the surgery area.
- Maintain all required materials and supplies in the laboratory, surgery and storage areas.
- Submit equipment and supply requests for approval by a government official.
- Utilize sterile technique to culture, expand and differentiate human/animal cells in vitro.
- Prepare media, buffers and reagents for experiments.
- Handle both animal/human pathological material.
- Utilize proper disposal of liquid wastes.
- Utilize spreadsheets and image analysis programs for data analysis.
- Isolate biomolecules from study samples. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), ribonucleic acid (RNA), and proteins are the most commonly extracted biomolecules.
- Perform polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using nucleic acids (DNA/RNA) derived from study samples. Most commonly performed types of PCR include reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) and quantitative/real-time PCR (qPCR).
- Separate and analyze sample proteins using various laboratory techniques. These techniques include enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), magnetic bead multiplex assays and Western Blotting.
- Provide technical assistance to PIs as requested.
- Learn new methods and techniques as required.
- Accurately enter and organize data collected during protocols utilizing Excel spreadsheets.
- Maintain records of experiments.
- Generate data for inclusion in study presentations and publications.
- Perform basic statistical computations of "raw data” (e.g. mean, standard deviation, standard error, and analysis of variance).
Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Sciences, or Medicine.
Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements:
3-5 years of relevant work experience is required.
Animal surgery experience
Background/Security:
Eligible to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/ Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
