Position Summary
Green Bank Observatory (GBO) enables leading edge research at radio wavelengths by offering telescope, facility and advanced instrumentation access to the astronomy community as well as to other basic and applied research communities. Nestled in the mountain ranges and farmland of West Virginia, within the National Quiet Zone, radio astronomers are using the Green Bank Telescope to listen to the remote whispers of the universe, in order to discover answers to our most astounding astronomical questions. With radio astronomy as its foundation, the Green Bank Observatory is a world leader in advancing research, innovation, and education.
At the GBO in Green Bank, West Virginia, we have an employment opportunity for a Janitor. Under minimal supervision, the Janitor will be responsible for: cleaning office buildings, trash disposal, litter control, cleaning of housing and other areas as assigned.
What You Will Be Doing:
- Cleaning offices, hallways, rest rooms, elevators, stairways, shops and other work areas, including sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors.
- Washing windows, door panels, and sills.
- Emptying wastebaskets, and transporting trash and waste to disposal area.
- Replenishing restroom supplies.
- May clean rugs, carpets, furniture, and draperies as required.
- May be required to record data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning of machinery or equipment to supervisory staff.
- Performing grounds keeping duties such as litter control, sweeping sidewalks, trash collection, and vehicle refueling as assigned.
- Works as part of Maintenance or Engineering & Services team and assists any or all other areas, as needed.
- Must be able to operate a vehicle, a valid driver's license is required.
- Proactive compliance with NRAO and government safety policies and procedures in own work area is expected.
- May watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and security doors left unlocked.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee works both inside and outside, occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, and occasionally works at heights over five feet. The employee will work around sewage. The employee will work with various chemicals including but not limited to pesticide and herbicides.
Who You Are:
- You have a High school diploma or GED
- You have a minimum of 1 month of experience
- You value working and living in a rural environment
- Capable of working alone with minimal supervision
- You have a valid Driver's License
Additional Requirements:
- CPR and First Aid certifications may be required

The selected candidate must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment/pre-placement drug screen. Failure to pass the screen will disqualify the candidate from employment consideration for a period of six months from the date of the results.

Compensation

The starting salary/hourly rate of this position is $15.00 per hour.
