Job Description Summary
Basic Purpose
Elevator Inspectors perform complex inspections of new and existing conveyance equipment, including elevators, escalators, vertical platform lifts and dumb waiters to ensure compliance with standard building and safety codes. Elevator Inspectors are responsible for enforcing compliance with codes to ensure public safety. Elevator Inspectors investigate complaints concerning conveyance equipment, recommend repairs and follow up to ensure compliance. Elevator Inspectors maintain accurate records and reports of each inspection. In addition, Elevator Inspectors interpret and explain building and safety codes to contractors, maintenance workers, property owners, and to the general public.
Scope
- Elevator inspectors ensure that elevators and escalators are safe for use. Inspectors verify that lift equipment meets standard building and safety codes, issuing certificates of compliance or non-- compliance based on their findings.
- Inspects elevators, escalators, lifts, and other conveyance systems to ensure components are compliant with all adopted codes as it pertains to the state/local requirements.
- Submits reports to the authority having jurisdiction(AHJ), provides copy to owner, and copy to appropriate ATIS office.
- Provides interpretation and recommendations to ensure compliance with the intent of each code.
- Effectively communicates findings to building owners and contractors.
- Picks up extra inspections as needed.
- Generates new customers for services.
- Explains and clarifies code-related problems with contractor field personnel.
- Communicates and upholds standards consistently.
- Keeps abreast of code developments and changes pertaining to elevators and inspections.
- Completes annual Continuing Education Classes, to keep abreast of all code developments, code changes, and regulation requirements as it pertains to elevators, escalators, lifts, and all other conveyance systems.
- Work Environment/Physical Demands
-This position operates in varied environments.
- Routinely deals with loud noises, working near moving and/or mechanical parts, and in high, precarious places.
- Extremely demanding attention is required.
- Regularly required to talk and listen.
- Required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Considerable time is spent in the field inspecting elevators, escalators, and various other lift equipment.
- Inspection sites can be dirty, cluttered with materials or debris. Inspectors may have to climb ladders or many flights of stairs, or crawl around in tight spaces.
- Inspectors must adhere to safety requirements, including PPE at constructions sites such as wearing hard hats, safety shoes, high visibility vest, and eye protection.
- There can be a risk of electric shock due to working near working mechanical parts and wires. Environments can be dusty and include various odors.
- There is often vibration while riding the elevators.
- Position deals with various non-weather conditions including heat and cold and periodically must deal with outdoor weather conditions.
Qualifications
- Must have a Certified Elevator Inspection License through NEASA International or the QEI Training Fund (QEITF).
- Must have additional AHJ Licenses/Certifications for the AHJs in which you will be working as well as maintaining those licenses annually as required.
- Need to be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing when working with maintenance companies, building owners, and others.
- Must be able to comply with and understand the applicable ordinances and code of ethics as set forth by the certifying organization.
- Must be able to use laptop or tablet computer to enter inspection reports, inspection results including violations, update information within portals, as well as look up code and standards related to elevator inspections.
- Ideal candidate should have considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, and tools of the industry.
- Must exhibit good social skills and be able to deal with the public.
Travel
Travel to and from jobs is required to service our clients and customers. Travel may be required but will be determined on as needed basis.
