Front of House Manager
The Opportunity
The Jewish Museum of Maryland (JMM) seeks a Front of House Manager to be a part of a team that deeply appreciates the role of museums in building community, exploring identity, and activating Jewish values. Reporting to the Culture + Change Director, and supervising the Visitor Experience Coordinator, this role will manage the Museum's public daily operations, including visitor experience, volunteer management, routine facilities, rental management, and security coordination.
Main Responsibilities
- With support from the Visitor Experience Coordinator, serve as the first point of contact for visitors, facilitating admissions, orientation, and collecting visitor data.
- Develop dynamic and multifaceted museum experiences that are sensitive to a broad range of visitors, their interests, and museum-going preferences/desires.
- Develop and implement strategic partnerships and outreach initiatives to attract new rentals, maximize revenue, and streamline the scheduling, payment, and facilitation of site rentals, including the museum building and the historic Lloyd Street Synagogue.
- Manage our adult group program for both onsite and digital experiences.
- Coordinate and manage the museum’s volunteer program, including recruitment, scheduling, training, and ongoing support to ensure an engaging and meaningful experience for volunteers and visitors alike.
- Assist with a variety of administrative tasks as needed to keep day-to-day operations running smoothly.
- Interact with JMM visitors and colleagues in a friendly, professional, and safe manner.
- Deliver engaging on-site and virtual tours of the Museum’s historic synagogues and exhibitions for individuals and adult groups.
- Contributing to the overall care of the Museum’s front of house, performing light, routine maintenance tasks.
- Schedule and coordinate with contractors as needed for basic site maintenance.
- Track and manage front-of-house budget
- Train and communicate with security guards, program keycards and IDs, and complete monthly safety inspections.

Qualifications
The position requires a combination of strong professional credentials and demonstrated skills and success in managing front-of-house operations, enhancing visitor experiences, supervising staff and volunteers, and coordinating operational logistics in a museum or similar setting.
The successful candidate should present most of the following:
- 2+ years working in front-of-house management, visitor services, or a comparable role in a cultural heritage or community organization.
- Strong computer/technology skills, a familiarity with Zoom and Blackbaud Altru would be a plus.
- Experience recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers.
- Demonstrated success in working with a culturally diverse community.
- Ability to continually develop skills related to the use of rapidly changing technology and communications practices
- Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, anticipate needs, and implement improvements that benefit visitors, volunteers, and staff.
- Strong written and oral communication, including experience or comfort in public speaking and tour facilitation.
- Ability to manage challenging interactions with empathy and patience
- Willingness to learn new tools and processes that enhance operations and the visitor journey.
- Ability to successfully interact and collaborate with key stakeholders to achieve
results, including vendors, volunteers, and board members
- Experience working within a Jewish communal setting a plus

What we are offering
- The annual salary for this position is $50,000.
- Full-time staff at the Jewish Museum of Maryland work 30 hours per week, within standard operating hours. Schedules are determined between each staff member and their manager. The Front of House Manager’s typical schedule is Sunday through Wednesday, with occasional evening hours or shifts on other days of the week as needed to support museum operations, events, and rentals.

- We close the Museum for New Years Day, MLK Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day following Thanksgiving

What to expect
- Step one: All submissions will be reviewed, and the initial candidate pool will be formed. Not all submissions will make it into the candidate pool. Once the pool of candidates is established, a brief phone interview will be set up with a member of the Human Resources staff.
- Step two: Remaining candidates will take part in no more than two interviews with members of the Jewish Museum of Maryland team via Zoom or in-person depending on the state of the pandemic, and the comfort level of everyone involved. The final candidate will be selected after this interview.
- Step Three: Selection and placement of the final candidate. Placement for this position is anticipated to occur in April/May 2025. Once the final candidate has accepted their offer of employment, all other applicants will be notified of their status.
