Responsibilities:


The Explosive Safety Specialist provides a critical role in developing and maintaining a comprehensive explosive safety program in accordance with DOT, U.S. Air Force, Space Force and NOTU Explosive Safety Instructions.

The Explosive Safety Specialist provides oversight and evaluation of hazardous operations involving ordnance, conducts Explosive Safety Training, performs spot inspections and assists in hazardous operations procedure development.

This position also has ancillary responsibilities to support the occupational health and safety program. This position also maintains the DOT Driver’s Qualification Files for the contract. The Explosive Safety Specialist performs work on-site.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitors compliance with explosive safety procedures and practices, provides oversite during hazardous operations at various locations at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
  • Performs and documents spot inspections of ordnance-handling facilities and operations and follows up on noted observations and discrepancies until corrective actions are complete.
  • Conducts Explosive Safety Training for space launch customers twice per month.
  • Maintains training records and provides completion cards to students upon completion of training. Assists in the development of procedures and tracks reviews and approvals.
  • Manages the contract’s DOT Driver’s Qualification Files to ensure compliance with the applicable DOT Regulations.
  • Assists the CLOIS Safety Engineer in monitoring crane lift operations, confined space entries, hazardous work environments, and accident investigations.

  • May be asked to support hurricane damage assessment, preparation and recovery processes.

Requirements:
Educational/Training Requirements:
High-school diploma, or equivalent. An Associate’s degree in a related field is a plus. Military background, or related field plus two (2) to four (4) years’ experience in Explosive Safety is preferred. Working knowledge of DOT Regulations. Some training and experience in the field of Occupational Safety and Health is desirable.


Skill Requirements/Qualifications:
A working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Standards including crane safety, personal protective equipment, and safety training is desirable. A working knowledge of MS Office software is required. Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written formats. Knowledge of training techniques and instructional materials is required. Ability to plan, organize work, and coordinate with multiple agencies to achieve results. Ability to manage DOT Driver’s Qualification Files is required.
Ability to work varying hours, occasionally in hazardous operations locations. Must currently possess or be able to obtain a security clearance. US Citizenship is required for obtaining a clearance. Valid State of Florida driver’s license is required.

Work Environment:
The Explosive Safety Specialist will have an assigned indoor workspace. Frequently, the Explosive Safety Specialist will work at various locations including storage areas, ordnance-handling areas, wharfs, and industrial areas. Wearing of Personal Protective Equipment is required in many areas. Work areas are both indoors and outdoors. Physical location and workstation space may comply with standards established the USSF facility space requirements and may require working close to others. This is an on-site position.

Physical Demands:
A background in military ordnance and/or formal education and working knowledge of DoD, Air Force, Space Force, and/or Navy Explosive Safety instructions, standards, and procedures is required.  Two (2) to four (4) years of related experience is required.

Ability to lift up to 30 pounds, sit at a desk, or stand for long periods. Ability to climb stairs and/or ladders, walking outdoors in uneven terrain/surfaces. Ability to squat, kneel, reach and react quickly to alarms. Be able to visually observe and inspect details of objects and work areas.
