Support Scientist - MOSAICS
Roles/Responsibilities:
The part-time Sr. Support Scientist will have the following major roles in the execution of his/her duties in this position.
MOSAICS Program Activities: The Sr. Support Scientist will lead efforts to engage, recruit and train new faculty PIs, as well as provide support for the management, planning, and communications efforts to the MOSAICS Program, as relates to program planning, proposal review and evaluation, and related activities.
Specific duties in this role will include:
- Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with scientists, engineers, and upper-level managers.
- Lead and participate in publications describing the program goals and results.
- Propose, design and lead engagement and networking events at: 1) professional society meetings, 2) periodic focused community workshops, and/or 3) symposia for selected team participants.
- Prepare presentations on the results of studies.
- Interface with diverse organizations within and outside of NASA SMD.
Other requirements:
In addition to the above roles and responsibilities, the Sr. Support Scientist will be expected to be available during business hours, be responsive to management, attend appropriate NASA meetings, and perform other duties as assigned, including travel to attend scientific and or management meetings, and proposal peer reviews, team retreats and other meetings. It is expected that the position will be fully remote, and part-time.
The Sr. Support Scientist will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) and strictly adhere to a conflict of interest avoidance and mitigation plan. It is expected that the Sr. Support Scientist will not participate in the development of nor be a member on proposal teams. The Sr. Support Scientist must openly disclose and identify any and all matters that give rise to a potential conflict of interest. This includes the appearance of bias created by involvement of a spouse or family member in any part of the proposal process. The candidate must identify any recent employment and science collaborations that present a potential conflict of interest and/or may create an appearance of bias towards certain proposers.
Background and qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated familiarity with the processes of proposing for and conducting federally funded research at an emerging research institution, as well as with the proposal call development, review and funding processes within NASA SMD. The Sr. Support Scientist must have familiarity and knowledge of the proposal development processes at a variety of institutions beyond the home institution. Qualifications therefore include a physical science Ph.D., with relevant professional experience such as: a faculty member at an emerging research institution, committee leadership of professional societies, and or familiarity proposing to NASA SMD grant programs as well as administering NASA SMD grant programs. Lastly, a candidate must have demonstrated leadership in activities focused on creating a more equitable environment in science.
Summary of Requirements:
- The Sr. Support Scientist must have a physical science degree (preferably Ph. D) and 10 years of experience
- The candidate must have demonstrated professional experience in the management of research-funding programs;
- Experience in performing quantitative and qualitative analysis of programs;
- Demonstrated effectiveness with designing symposia at professional meetings;
- Demonstrated effectiveness at leading and publishing results in a variety of publications, including refereed papers, contributed manuscripts and white papers;
- The candidate must be able to pass a basic background screening for admission into a Federal facility.
