Peak Adventures’ purpose is to kindle personal growth, leadership, and connections through experiences in the outdoors.
ASI’s Peak Adventures is an outdoor adventure program dedicated to getting Sac State Students outside. Peak Adventures provides guided outdoor trips, low cost gear rentals, full service bike repair at The Bike Shop, summer youth camps and team building at The Challenge Center.
SUMMARY:
Outdoor Adventures Manager is responsible for the oversight of Peak Adventures’ outdoor trips, summer camps, clinics, and rafting program. The Outdoor Adventures Manager provides leadership and direction, exercising independent judgment in the development of the program, risk management, staffing, training, policies and procedures, time keeping, as well as assisting with budgeting and marketing. The Outdoor Adventures Manager has overall responsibility for the operations and the management of all outdoor equipment inventory and vehicles.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Safely perform job duties
- Oversee the selection, training, supervision and evaluation of summer camp and outdoor program staff. Ensure appropriate staffing for scheduled trips. Oversee all trip logistics from pre-trip planning and preparation to post-trip follow-up.
- Develop and implement appropriate training programs to meet the demands of the outdoor program. Training and advisement will include, but are not limited to, proper use of equipment, risk management, back-country first aid and emergency response, accident prevention, white-water guide training, commercial driver training, as well as training in group dynamics and leadership. Develop and deliver other trainings as directed based upon program needs. Create and maintain a tracking system for employee trainings and certifications. Implement the use of Outdoor Skills Task Lists and develop Outdoor Program Manuals to make training efforts consistent and repeatable.
- Lead and facilitate all overnight trips and programs and various day trips and programs. Provide vehicle shuttle assistance for trips when necessary and be on-call for emergencies.
- Responsible for the upkeep and scheduled maintenance of all vehicles, including passenger vans, boats, golf carts and trailers. Develop and maintain an equipment and vehicle maintenance tracking system. Coordinate with ASI Human Resources for the implementation of the DMV pull notice program.
- Assist in the procurement and management of all outdoor program equipment to ensure that equipment is available, reserved, and in working order for programmed events. Repair or outsource the repair of equipment as needed. Develop and maintain professional relationships with vendors and monitor product warranties. Conduct regular inventory for all outdoor equipment.
- Oversee program planning and development for summer camps. This includes, but is not limited to, securing reservations, acquisition of necessary program supplies, coordination of all registration materials, budgeting, and other documents that support excellent customer service.
- In collaboration with the Department Director, plan and budget for all outdoor trips offered each year.
- Work with the Marketing and Sales Specialist as needed to help generate marketing strategies for all categories of outdoor trips.
- Process timely permit requests for a variety of state and federal agencies providing all required documents. Complete all required reports to permitting agency. Based on the program schedule, make reservations at the designated state/federal parks and other third-party vendors. Meet all established deadlines for permits and reservations.
- Maintain vendor relationships for industry discounts to the outdoor program; and assist staff with industry pro deal ordering.
- Ability to work nights and weekends.
- Ability to be on-call.
- Other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 2 years of outdoor programming experience (risk management, trip logistics and equipment management)
- Previous leadership experience (leading trips and supervising staff)
- Bachelor’s degree
- Possession of a California driver’s license and ability to meet ASI driving criteria
- Proficient in windows-based personal computers – Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
- CPR certification (must have required certifications within six months of hire)
- Wilderness First Responder (or higher level) certification (must have required certifications within six months of hire)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Professional instructor certifications in related fields (AMGA, Swift-Water Rescue, Leave No Trace (LNT), etc.)
- Proficiency in white-water rafting, top-rope rock climbing site management, and mountain biking
- Possession of a commercial class C driver’s license with passenger endorsement
- Head Raft Guide experience
- LNT Master Educator certification
PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to fingers, handle, feel, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. The employee must:
- Frequently life and/or move up to 60 pounds or 100 pounds assisted.
- Must be able to climb, kneel, squat, reach overhead
- Ability to safely climb up to approximately 50 feet above the ground (using safety equipment)
- Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and be prepared for both heat and cold.
- Must be able to meet minimum physical requirements for individual activity.
- Must be able to maintain a high level of focus for long periods.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Combination of indoors and outdoors. Exposed to rain, snow, heat and cold temperatures up to 24 hours a day.
