General Sales Manager
Reports To: General Manager
Position Summary:
General Sales Manager assumes responsibility for customer retention and profitability in the new and used vehicle profit centers. General Sales Manager fulfills responsibilities primarily through effective personnel management, knowledge of market potential, established performance standards, and a keen awareness of each department’s break-even data.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Strives to contribute to the store’s efforts to deliver an exceptional guest experience to our guests by making it a top priority to help other team members who are serving out guests (e.g., by being highly responsive to those team members’ requests for information or assistance that will help them serve our guests). Never think “that’s not in my job description”. Wowing our guests is the job of EVERY team member, even those who don’t interact directly with guests!
- When interacting with guests, seeks to deliver exceptional guest experiences by going above-and-beyond. When not interacting with guests, gives priority to helping other team members deliver exceptional guest experiences (e.g., by being highly responsive to their requests for information or assistance that will help them serve our guests).
- Serves as a role model/servant leader and ensures that the core values of the company are encompassed in behavior at all times.

- Hire, train, supervise, and monitor the performance of the new and used vehicle department managers.
- Participates in the preparation of the annual dealership forecast by projecting unit sales, gross profits, expenses, and operating profits for the sales departments.
- Meets with sales managers to establish annual and monthly objectives for unit sales, gross profits, expenses, and operating profit.
- Ensures that sales managers understand dealership policies, procedures, and sales systems.
- Works with dealer and general manager to determine appropriate days’ supply for new and used vehicles and orders/acquires vehicle inventory accordingly.
- Establishes procedures for quick disposal of overaged vehicles.
- Issues all demonstrators and ensures that appropriate dealership records are maintained and checks the condition monthly.
- Audits repair orders for used vehicles as needed to ensure prompt reconditioning.
- Meets with the general manager to review monthly forecasts, commission sheets, productivity reports, and the profit performance of each department as a whole and each salesperson individually.
- Studies local market conditions, demographics, and past sales history. Makes recommendations to the general manager regarding short and long range advertising plans, sales promotions, staffing needs, lease promotions, and compensation plans.
- Conducts major sales promotions and advertising as needed (i.e., used car classifieds, large new display ads, radio, etc.).
- Approves all sales incentives in writing before submitting to the office.
- Addresses customer complaints to ensure high level of customer satisfaction.
- Creates and monitors use of systems that ensure ongoing sales training, including weekly sales meetings.
- Audits all appraisals of trade-in vehicles and attends auction at least once a month.
- Is available for work during assigned hours. Volunteers for additional work hours when requested by management.
- Reviews and initials all deals before they are posted.
- Facilitates new-vehicle pre-delivery with the service manager.
- Reports on time to work and follows the schedule provided for you. Calls supervisor if he/she cannot be to work on time.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.
- The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
