Environmental Management - Household Hazardous Waste Facility - Part Time Environmental Management

Under the direction of the HHW Coordinator, the Hazardous Waste Technician is responsible for the safe collection, handling, and disposal of various types of hazardous waste materials. This includes batteries, chemicals, solvents, and other potentially harmful substances. The Hazardous Waste Technician assists with Household Waste Program and facilities within the Allen County Department of Environmental Management. This position is Not Covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Collects light bulbs, batteries, and maintains supplies at various partnership locations.
- Assists with unloading vehicles, weighing products, and segregating material for the household hazardous waste program.
- Assists with vendor shipments, loading and unloading supplies.
- Handles and sorts various types of batteries and prepares for shipping.
- Assists with the set up and tear down of events.
- Assists with other programs of the Allen County Department of Environmental Management including, but not limited to, Non-Profit programs, Recycling Trailers, Propane Tanks, Fire Extinguishers, and other projects as required.
- Helps clean and maintain vehicles, equipment, and facilities.
- Safely load, secure, and transport material to facilities.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance on waste collection and transportation equipment. Report any malfunctions or issues promptly and assist in coordinating repairs or replacements as needed.
- Set up and tear down collection events, including packaging and labeling drums/pallets.
- Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or GED (Associate’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related field preferred)
- Prior experience in hazardous waste management, waste disposal, or a related field is highly desirable; on-the job training provided
- Working knowledge of equipment operation and the ability to operate assigned tools and equipment (bobcat or forklift preferred)
- Valid Indiana Driver’s License to operate County vehicles, box truck with lift gate and trailers
- Ability to lift and carry heavy loads and perform physical demanding tasks
- Ability to work independently and as a part of a team in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication, attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
- Proficient in using computers and relevant software applications
- Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required

The Part-Time Hazardous Waste Technician interacts with employees from the Allen County Department of Environmental Management, various county departments. Additionally, they communicate with store locations and the general public when collecting batteries and light bulbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Part-Time Hazardous Waste Technician performs their duties in diverse weather conditions, which necessitates exposure to extreme temperatures, hazardous equipment, high levels of noise, and unpleasant odors or fumes. The role involves regular tasks such as standing up 2 hours, bending, pushing or pulling heavy loads, reaching overhead, and frequently lifting objects weighing up to 75 lbs. Attention to detail, monitoring equipment, and conducting meticulous inspections are essential aspects of the job.
The Part-Time Hazardous Waste Technician’s role involves a variety of physical activities, including occasional standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, and physical endurance tasks. Fine motor skills and gross motor skills are frequently and occasionally required, respectively. The job also involves frequent sitting and repetitive motions. The role demands handling hazardous materials, requiring careful adherence to safety protocols, attention to detail, and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks. The position also necessitates a valid driver's license and the ability to operate specific equipment, emphasizing the importance of operational knowledge and teamwork in a fast-paced environment.

HOURS:
Standard 30-hour workweek, plus overtime as required.
