HVAC LEAD

 

 

 

 

Department: Maintenance                                                                                                                                                                                       FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Under the direction of the Deputy Supervisor of Outlying Areas and/or Deputy Supervisor Downtown Area, the HVAC Lead is responsible for the maintenance, repair and installation of County owned HVACR equipment.  This position is covered under the Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

                            

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Responsible for inspecting HVACR equipment for proper operation and safety controls, ensuring operational performance in compliance with applicable codes and specifications.
  • Performs routine maintenance on HVACR units, including but not limited to, changing filters, lubricating units and replacing belts.
  • Operates gas cooling systems to provide refrigeration and air-condition to buildings.
  • Repairs refrigeration systems.  Dismantles malfunctioning systems, tests components using electrical, mechanical and pneumatic testing equipment, re-packs pumps and compressors, cleans condensers, and replaces worn or defective parts.
  • Installs refrigeration systems according to blueprints and specifications.
  • Pumps specified gas and fluids into systems, starts and tests systems, observes system operations, reads gauges and instruments, and adjusts mechanisms and pumps to control level of fluid pressure and temperature.
  • Fabricates and installs ductwork.
  • Responsible for cleaning and maintaining all tools and equipment used.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • High School Diploma or GED and specialized training in HVAC with more than five years’ Maintenance and HVAC experience
  • Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning, and Duct Systems Supervisor’s License
  • Refrigerant Usage License
  • Aerial Work Platform Safety Course Certification preferred
  • Valid Driver’s License to drive County vehicle to and from job sites and home
  • Knowledge of refrigerate maintenance and installation operations and the ability to apply appropriate procedures to daily operations
  • Knowledge of various codes related to refrigeration and air conditioning units, as well as building, construction and electrical codes
  • Knowledge of applicable safety practices and procedures and the ability to take proper precautions in order to ensure personal safety of self, co-workers, building personnel, and visitors
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints
  • Ability to plan and implement refrigeration installations and maintenance projects
  • Ability to use power tools, torches, scales, Pittsburg machine and other job related equipment
  • Must be able to pass a Federal background check in order to gain access to secured buildings



 

 

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

 

The HVAC Lead performs work that involves a variety of complex tasks and processes when fabricating and installing ductwork, repairing refrigeration systems, and inspecting and maintaining HVACR systems. Thorough knowledge of HVAC is required in order to complete maintenance, repairs and installations of County owned HVACR equipment.

 

RESPONSIBILITY:

 

The HVAC Lead performs work that requires a high degree of accuracy in order to protect self, others, tools and materials. The HVAC Lead works with considerable independence, sometimes deviating from instructions when prior approval is given.

 

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

 

The HVAC Lead maintains frequent contact with other County employees, outside vendors and the public when performing maintenance, repair and installation on County owned HVACR units.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

The HVAC Lead performs work that requires frequent walking, with some standing.  Frequent lifting of up to sixty pounds, bending, pushing/pulling loads, reaching over head, kneeling, crawling, climbing ladders, attention to detail, monitoring of equipment and detailed inspection is required. Some typing and proofreading exists.  The HVAC Lead is very frequently exposed to extreme temperatures and dangerous equipment and is frequently exposed to chemicals, noise and noxious odors/fumes.

LICENSING:

Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning, and Duct Systems Supervisor’s License

Refrigerant Usage License

Aerial Work Platform Safety Course Certification preferred

Valid Driver’s License to drive County vehicle to and from job sites and home

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:

Deputy Supervisor of Outlying Areas and/or Deputy Supervisor Downtown Area

 

HOURS:

Monday – Friday; 7:00 am – 3:00 pm and as needed; overtime and participation in rotational on-call duties required.
