Your fist step is to apply as an Allen county Confinement Officer. Hiring is done internally, giving individuals the opportunity to continue growing while adding more "tools to their toolbox" with experience.  

Under the direction of the Jail Matron, the Commissary Clerk – Inputter is responsible for accurately calculating inmate orders, processing deductions from inmate cash accounts using the Spillman database system and assisting with monthly inventory.  The role supports commissary operations by ensuring precise data entry, record-keeping, and inventory control.  This position is not covered under the Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Accurately calculate inmate orders to ensure proper processing and distribution.
  • Make deductions from inmate cash accounts using the Spillman database.
  • Assist with monthly inventory to ensure stock levels are properly recorded and accounted for.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the commissary area to support efficiency and safety.
  • Follow all security protocols to ensure a safe working environment when interacting with inmates.
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as barcode scanners, label printers, and computer systems for order processing.
  • Perform data entry and record-keeping to ensure accurate tracking of inventory and order fulfillment.
  • Communicate effectively with jail staff and supervisors to address order discrepancies or supply needs.
  • Adhere to confidentiality and security guidelines related to inmate records and commissary transactions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support commissary operations.

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Ability to accurately perform basic math calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  • Proficiency in using computers and job-related equipment (barcode scanners, label printers, etc.)
  • Strong attention to detail for accurate order filling, bagging, and inventory tracking
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, lift up to 40 pounds, and reach overhead frequently
  • Effective communication skills to interact with jail staff, supervisors, and team members
  • Ability to maintain professionalism when working near inmates
  • Adherence to confidentiality and security protocols for inmate information and commissary operations
  • Ability to work in a secure correctional facility with potential exposure to inmates who may display aggressive behavior

 

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

 

The Commissary Clerk – Inputter maintains frequent contact with law enforcement, confinement personnel and inmates to process inmate orders and ensure accurate account deduction.  Minimal contact with inmates may be required, but the position primarily involves indirect support for commissary services.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

The Commissary Clerk – Inputter role requires extended periods of sitting, typing, and data entry, along with attention to detail and accuracy. Work is performed in a secure, correctional facility where adherence to confidentiality and security protocols is essential. While the role is primarily sedentary, occasional lifting of light objects (up to 10 pounds) may be required.

 

  • Primarily seated with occasional standing, walking, and bending.
  • Limited interaction in a secure facility with strict safety protocols.
  • Frequent typing and data entry to ensure accurate orders and account deductions.
