Under the direction of the Assistant Operations Manager, the Operations Crew Leader oversees and assists with change-over, set-up requirements, and providing services for events at the War Memorial Coliseum. This position is Covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Ensure the readiness of the arena, expo center, and conference center for various events, including sporting events, concerts, meetings, and banquets.
- Set up appropriate chairs, tables, and equipment, and prepare the floor for events.
- Arrange telescopic seating, carpet, tables, and chairs, as well as staging for events at the venue.
- Complete meeting room setups according to official event diagrams and adjust as needed.
- Assist in training and monitoring work crews to ensure the safe handling of equipment, machinery, and chemicals, maintaining a secure environment for clients, guests, and employees.
- Aid work crews in tasks like ice making and removal, and setting up and removing the basketball court.
- Communicate with clients, vendors, and guests to address questions and resolve issues throughout the event process.
- Operate various equipment, including Zamboni, forklift, Bobcat, snow plows, mowers, trimmers, and hand tools for general repairs, maintenance, and safety tasks at the venue.
- Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of three years' experience in expo and event center operations, trade shows, stage building, or a related field
- Capable of obtaining a forklift certification within 30 days of starting employment
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license to operate county-owned vehicles
- Proficient in verbal communication skills to effectively instruct crews, expedite work flow, and resolve routine issues
- Competent in using a variety of power and manual tools for tasks such as removing dasher boards, assembling basketball flooring and goals, and conducting onsite asset repairs
- Ability to manage and train crews in the safe and efficient operation of job-related equipment
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal safety codes and regulations to ensure compliance with all rules and regulations
- Working knowledge of Coliseum operations, specialized techniques, and accepted practices of event change-over and set-up would be advantageous
- Flexibility to work varying shifts to accommodate event schedules, including nights, holidays, and weekends, as required
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and other job-related software
DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
The Operations Crew Leader carries out moderately complex and diverse standardized duties, preparing the arena, expo center, and conference center for various events such as sports, concerts, meetings, and banquets. They arrange chairs, tables, and equipment, and ensure the event floor is appropriately set up. The Operations Crew Leader possesses basic skills in understanding and reading official event diagrams for event set-up.
RESPONSIBILITY:
The Operations Crew Leader carries out tasks that require a moderate level of attention and expertise. They assist in training and supervising work crews to ensure the safe and proper handling of equipment, machinery, and chemicals, and maintain a safe environment for clients, guests, and employees at all times. The work is conducted with moderate supervision, and instructions are generally comprehensive, especially when preparing for events at the expo center or conference center.
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
The Operations Crew Leader regularly communicates with County employees, contract workers, and the public while handling the servicing, setup, and teardown of events at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Operations Crew Leader operates in an environment comprising an arena, expo center, and conference center, where they frequently engage in activities such as standing, walking, lifting objects up to sixty pounds, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, kneeling, crawling, and climbing ladders. The job entails mental and visual focus, keen attention to detail, and thorough inspections. The position may involve working at heights and being exposed to hazardous equipment. Some tasks may require sitting and typing, monitoring equipment, and exposure to temperature fluctuations, dangerous chemicals, loud noise, and unpleasant odors/fumes.
SUPERVISION:
Supervises crews ranging in size from one person to eight people.
LICENSING:
Ability to obtain a forklift certification within 30 days employment
Valid Driver’s License Required

HOURS:
40 hours/week; shifts vary based on events; may include nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
