Under the direction of the Assistant Building Commissioner, the Multi Trade Inspector performs inspections for new construction, remodels, and renovations of residential and commercial buildings. Also ensures compliance with local and state building codes. This position is Covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•
Performs trade alterations and replacement inspections. (Roofs, Siding, Windows, HVAC, and Water Heater replacements).
•
Performs field inspections for all trades to ensure compliance with building codes and design requirements, issuing notice of violations and/or corrective actions, if necessary.
•
Responsible for working with contractors, design professionals and owners regarding code requirements, including explanation, gaining cooperation and compliance for all corrections and violations.
•
Reviews routing requests and prepares reports of inspection findings, complaints, and follow-up visits.
•
Receives, investigates, and resolves special complaints/problems concerning residential and commercial buildings and structures.
•
Performs follow-up inspections of sites in violation of codes to determine if compliance has been met.
•
Responsible for interpreting, understanding, and explaining all pertinent information concerning residential and commercial building and structure requirements including local and state codes.

Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
•
High School Diploma or GED with eight years of experience as a licensed journeyman or building contractor’s license for residential or commercial construction work
•
Valid Driver’s License required to perform field work and/or to operate county owned vehicles required
•
Valid Allen County journeyman or building contractor’s license
•
Valid Inspector Certification within one year of employment
•
Ability to understand and communicate building codes to contractors and owners
•
Basic computer and typing skills including the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job-related software
•
Basic math and measuring skills using tape measures and levels
•
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and maps
•
Thorough knowledge of housing codes and related construction materials, practices, and procedures
DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
The Multi Trade Inspector performs work that is broad in scope and of substantial intricacy when conducting field inspections regarding compliance with building codes and design requirements. Judgment is needed in selecting the most pertinent guidelines when investigating complaints concerning new construction, remodels, and renovations of residential buildings.

MULTI TRADE INSPECTOR
RESPONSIBILITY:
The Multi Trade Inspector provides substantial contributions when providing explanation and guidelines of state and local codes. Deviations from guidelines must be referred to the supervisor. Work is reviewed for soundness of judgment and conclusions.
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
The Multi Trade Inspector maintains frequent communication with other county employees, other county and government agencies, contractors, and the general public when conducting inspections and explaining, interpreting and enforcing codes.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Multi Trade Inspector performs field inspections, exposed to various weather conditions and physical hazards normally associated with construction sites and other inspection areas. Frequent typing, attention to detail, monitoring equipment, detailed inspection, and transcription/proofreading are required. The Multi Trade Inspector must be able to do some lifting up to forty pounds, reaching over head, and kneeling with frequent bending, climbing ladders, walking on uneven surfaces and will have exposure to noise and dangerous equipment.
