Under the direction of the Senior Residential Services Officer Shift Supervisor, the Part-Time Transport Driver is responsible for transporting participants to and from designated locations. This position is also responsible for ensuring the proper maintenance of all vehicles and equipment used to transport participants. This position is Not Covered (At-will) as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

                            

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Transport participants from Allen County Jail to Allen County Community Corrections (ACCC) and/or between ACCC facilities.
  • Transport participants to various approved appointments/locations.
  • Maintains frequent contact with the Communications Division informing them of location, including time of arrival and departure.
  • Directly supervises misdemeanor and/or felony offenders during transport, who may be classified as violent offenders.
  • Maintains a vehicle log.
  • Monitors and observes safety standards to protect program participants and reports any conduct violations of Allen County Community Corrections (ACCC) rules and regulations to appropriate staff.
  • Provides structure, accountability, and support to participants through interaction.
  • Completes and submits reports as directed by supervisor and/or per policy.
  • Maintains frequent contact with co-workers, law enforcement, jail staff, and members of the public.
  • Transports files, documents, and other essential communications between ACCC facilities.
  • Utilizes Motivational Interview Techniques with participants.
  • Assists program participants by answering general program questions, addresses concerns and monitors behavior throughout the transport.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of vehicles and equipment used, schedules vehicle services and repairs of equipment, as needed.
  • Assists in maintaining ACCC buildings and grounds to ensure all areas are clean and professional in appearance.
  • Testifies in court, as needed.
  • Assists other staff in completing assigned duties.
  • Attends various meeting, as required.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to serve the public with diplomacy and respect
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to write detailed reports and have great attention to detail
  • Ability to supervise criminal justice involved participants

 

 

REQUIREMENTS (Continued):

 

  • Working knowledge of defensive tactics
  • Ability to operate and maintain assigned vehicle, equipment, and uniform
  • Ability to communicate effectively via radio, phone or in person
  • The agency subscribes to the National Institute of Corrections’ Eight Principles of Effective Intervention (EBP), must be able to complete required Correctional EBP training programs and demonstrate competencies that focus on empirical recidivism risk reduction strategies
  • Ability to be certified in Motivational Interviewing (MI) within twelve months
  • Valid Driver’s License to operate ACCC vehicle and demonstrated safe driving record
  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision under time constraints
  • Ability to effectively listen, comprehend and communicate with co-workers, the public, detainees and other law enforcement agencies by radio, telephone, in person or in writing
  • Ability to facilitate productive communications while maintain a professional, prosocial relationship with participants and employees
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy when communicating with various individuals, including, being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversity, and disabilities
  • Knowledge of radio frequencies, codes, and procedures
  • Working knowledge of and ability to use standard office equipment, including computer, telephone, vehicle, and radio
  • Ability to pass Allen County’s online safe driving test
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of department information/records according to state requirements.
  • Ability to comply with all employer/department personnel policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct

 

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

 

The Part-Time Transport Driver maintains frequent communication with other County employees, program participants, government agencies and community organizations when picking up, transporting, and dropping off participants.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

The Part-Time Transport Driver will have daily contact with program participants who have been convicted of various misdemeanor and felony offenses and may be dangerous, violent and/or abusive. Driving a vehicle, sitting prolonged periods of time, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting and/or carrying objects under 40 pounds. Some typing and proofreading exist and frequent attention to detail, monitoring equipment and detailed inspection is required.  Frequent exposure to extreme temperatures exists.

LICENSING:

The agency subscribes to the National Institute of Corrections’ Eight Principles of Effective Intervention (EBP), must be able to complete required Correctional EBP training programs and demonstrate competencies that focus on empirical recidivism risk reduction strategies

Ability to be certified in Motivational Interviewing (MI) within twelve months

Valid Driver’s License to operate ACCC vehicle and demonstrated safe driving record

HOURS:

Up to 25 hours per week; Days and hours may vary as assigned. Weekends, as necessary
