Project Design Engineer

Summary:
We are looking for an experienced, passionate, hands-on Project Design Engineer to join our engineering team. You will help to develop and execute state-of-the-art planetarium display systems, modular structural frame domes and immersive dome structures. Many of these are one-of-a-kind designs that require our engineers to work closely with clients to ensure that every aspect of the final display meets the client’s demanding standards. This is a full-time position, and the ideal candidate is a creative individual who has a rigorous attention to detail and a knack for creating efficient mechanical designs.
Responsibilities:
- Design mechanical systems and dome structures. Structures can be spherical, cylindrical, toroidal, etc.
- Prepare architectural and mechanical models and documents for new and existing clients
- Create and maintain bills of material, specifications, and detailed drawings for comprehensive product designs.
- Coordinate with various stakeholders including clients, contractors, and team members, to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
- Implement and maintain quality control measures throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring that the final display/design meets the required standards.
- Meet with team and customers via computer, phone, e-mail, and face-to-face meetings.
- Limited travel for site visits, meetings, and installation assistance.
- Assist in product research and development
Experience:
- BS in mechanical engineering and at least eight years of related experience.
- Prefer experience with structural analysis and construction/architectural experience.
- Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles.
- Understanding of architectural and engineering drafting practices and procedures.
- Prefer hands-on experience in Lean Six Sigma and continuous improvement, certifications are a plus.
- Prefer experience in value engineering initiatives.
- Knowledge of symbols and terminology used in architectural and engineering documentation.
- CAD modeling and drafting - in-house system is KeyCreator.
- 3D visualization and modeling.
- Computer usage, Office suite including Excel VBA.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with team and customers.
- Prepare accurate, concise, and orderly documentation.
- Review architectural drawings and incorporate product systems once understood.
- Track and document changes throughout the design process.
- Work independently with moderate supervision.
- Manage multiple projects.
