Summary:

The City of Lawrence is seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join the Homeless Response Team as a part-time, temporary Homeless Response Team Member. This multidisciplinary team works directly with individuals experiencing homelessness, helping them access critical services and obtain essential benefits. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting outreach, supporting clients in securing benefits, and entering data into the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS).

 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct outreach in the community with the Homeless Response Team on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, engaging with individuals experiencing homelessness to provide support and resources.
  • Assist clients in identifying and applying for benefits such as Medicaid, SSI/SSDI, food stamps, housing assistance, and other support services.
  • Accurately enter client data into the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) to document services provided and track client progress.
  • Build rapport with unhoused individuals, assess their needs, and connect them with appropriate services.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, including mental health professionals, substance abuse specialists, peer support workers, and housing specialists.
  • Advocate for clients to ensure access to services and benefits within the community and through government agencies.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to developing and implementing outreach strategies.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards when working with sensitive client information.

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, especially in outreach or direct service roles.
  • SOAR SSI/SSDI training and experience assisting clients with obtaining disability benefits.
  • Lived experience with homelessness, mental health, or substance use recovery, and certification as a Peer Support Specialist is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) or similar data entry systems is an asset.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of local resources and social services available to unhoused populations.

 

Education:

High school diploma or GED
